| Hi Wizz, I grew up near Shaver. It is definitely worth a trip. Some of the best stuff is found in the Dinkey, courtright, wishon areas. Check out the swamp lake route and the hatch lake route. Bald Mountain is tame and probably only good for jeeps. Up near Huntington you have the red mountain route which continues up to Coyote Lake, that is good stuff. One of the longest and most picturesque trails is the Dusy-Ershim route which is a notorious 4-wheelin trail that scares the crap out of seasoned 4 wheelers, but dirt-bikes can take it no prob (of course). I would say one of the big selling points of the region is that it is in the vicinity of the high-sierras. That is some of the most stunning country I have ever seen. At the same time it is unpredictable. You can get hard-core snow storms coming without warning in the middle of summer, so go prepared. But you cant go wrong with a mix of dirt, granite, pine trees and complete isolation. |
