Default Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

The title says is all. (Almost)

A friend of mine and I are planning on hitting the OBCDR in the late spring of 2008. If any one has actual riding knowledge of this route, please post it here.

The bikes were going to be riding;
His bike is a 2005 XRL-650. The bike has many extras as well as the large capacity fuel tank.

My bike is a 2007 KLR-650. So far my bike is mostly stock but that is going to change before we hit the trail. Hand guards (Bark Busters), hard terrain tires, trail ready saddle bags are among the items I want to have on my scoot.

We’ve thought about doing this for quite a while now and it looks like it will happen next year. This January were sending off for all the maps so we can start plotting each days ride. We also plan on having another guy travel along with us that will be driving a chase truck with a tent-trailer in tow.

Our supplies list is growing almost every day. So far it includes items ranging form spare inner tubes to cell phones and G.P.S. units.

Any help, information from those who have been on this ride would be greatly appreciated.

Never done a ride like that, sounds fun!!

The cool thing about the bike you have now is you can ride it to GMB, race it that weekend and then ride it home!! Sounds like a plan????????

In researching this ride I've came across quite a few wright-ups of those who have done it. Here are two of them.

This guy I'm calling tonight.

This fella rode all the way from Sacramento CA. to Walla Walla WA. He did do a "FEW" things I wouldn't do. You'll see what I mean when you check out his post. It's a very long read so take you time.

The more time I spend collecting info. on this ride the more I can't wait to get out there.

I loved the report by mtrcycllvr. Yes, I actually took the time to read it. Hey, I'm on vacation. So did you get hold of him? I bet he would LOVE to talk about it with a fellow adventurer.
Dang I wish I could do that with you!
And one last question. After reading about all the obstacles, are you still planning on the guy in the chase truck coming along? I guess he could meet you at certain pre-arranged points.

Just take plenty of pics so you can share your ride with those of us less fortunate.

From the maps I've looked at so far, the chase truck will take mostly paved roads to meet Mike and I at point "B" of each leg. At the top of Oregon it gets a little spotty on which roads the truck can take without going hundreds of miles out of the way. After the three of us put our heads together, we'll figure something out.

As far as pic's go, the plan is to take more then we'll ever need. That way we might take just enough.

It's just a slide show but these guys were adventurers like my friend Boyd. In fact, their efforts paved the way for many of us.

Thanks David. Seeing that slide show reminds me that somewhere around here is a picture of my dad on his harley. Not sure of the year but I do know it's before I was born. Ya'll do the math.

If I can find that picture I'll see about getting it posted.

I've posted this info before, but since you are getting ready to head out, thought I would post again. There is a documentry out there featuring Ewan McGregor and his buddy, Charlie Borman. They have done a number of rides like you are planning, and finally decided to do a longer one and film it. There is a set of DVD's you can rent from netflix, or other DVD rental places. It's called "Long Way Round" [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] It is an incredible journey and kept my attention from start to finish. I understand they have another one now too, called Long Way Down that is similar, just not quite as long. I highly recommend you check them out.
