Default XR 80 hop-ups?

My son has a 2002 XR 80. He likes the size of the bike, but wants more power. I am looking for some low budget ideas. $300-$400 range.

We put a pipe (FMF Power Core IV) on our son's XR80 and it added some umph. Not tons, but for the price it helped.

Thanks for the info. I had also heard that I should open up the airbox. Unfortunatley, I don't know what I need to cut out to accomplish that. I think I will have to experiment with the jetting after the mode are done.

I have not heard the airbox mod, but that might be a good idea. I have not touched his jetting yet, but probably should at least take a look at it.

Here's what I did to my 1973 XR75 (back in 1973). It's the same engine today with a larger bore.

Aftermarket cam, larger carb (find one from an ATC 200 at the junk yard, get the manifold too), aftermarket pipe (made by Bassani back then), cut the top of the airbox open or at least remove the snorkel, high compression piston, button magneto, reduced weight rocker arms.

The biggest problem with the bike as it is stock is that it is starving for air AND fuel. Ever notice how it bogs if you grab a big handful of throttle? That's because it is too lean. Opening the air box, raising the needle in the carb, and maybe going up a couple of sizes on the main jet will definately help the power.

Thanks alot. Those mods should make more than enough power for him. I will start with the pipe, airbox and jetting and see how it works. If it looks like he needs more than that I might want to look at a bigger bike. Thanks again.

I jetted mine, cut holes in the airbox lid, and ran a powercore 4 FMF. Nice little power increase.........

I'm not knocken the FMF, but I heard great things about the XR 50-100 power tips. Has a spark arrester, has almost the same affect as the FMF and is around $30.00 Take a look

Those are great. The stock exhaust isn't bad, just take the baffle out and it should be free flowing and loud enough for him.

Take the airbox lid off (or cut the whole top of the airbox off like a lot of my friends do), and throw in a UNI AIR FILTER. The UNI comes with a new cage for the filter to replace the stock plugged up one so it can also breath better than just a new filter.

The snorkel (airbox lid) can be pulled of with eas, well my XR250R was pulled off with eas.

Also if you want a TON more power, bore it, get a new carb, and hotcams camshaft. That would really bump out some serious ponies for that bike. You could also lighten the flywheel for a more rev type riding.
