Hi there, just bought a little LT50 quad for the little ones & found it a bit on the under powered side for them, just wanted to know if someone out there could tell me how i go around de restricting/unrestricting the engine so i can get some xtra power/torque from it.
I look forward to hearing from you, thanx a lot.

If you already have all the baffles out (intake and exhaust) then you're looking at doing some real work to make it better. The stock port timing is very conservative and somewhat mismatched. The cylinder needed to be cleaned up so it was bored 0.040" and the corresponding piston fitted. I also ended up taking 0.055" off of the top of the cylinder, used a 0.040" base gasket and raised/widened the exhaust port to work with the new timing of the transfers for a peak around 6000 rpm. The clutch shoes were lightened for a higher engagement RPM and I went one tooth larger on the front sprocket. It moves pretty good now.

There are three things you need to do...

1) Pull off the carb and look in the intake. Some models have a washer with a hole in the middle in there to act as a restrictor plate. Use a screw driver and gently pry it out.

2) Pull the exhaust and look in there as well. Look for yet another restrictor plate and use a screw driver and gently pry it out.

3) Take the float bowl off the carb and look for the pilot jet. They use stacked pilot jets meaning that there are two intsalled. Take out the first one and leave the second one in there.

Thats about it.

The carb scematic on this will help too [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

My sisters lt50 has all the restrictors out, could I get away with just adding a uni air filter and sprockets and not have to worry about head shaving and the exhaust?

It wouldn't be worth it...the air filter won't make a noticable difference and the stock motor won't hardly pull gearing taller than stock.

Well it has a fresh top end, Do you know of anyone that makes an exhaust for these? I know they make them for the 80's and could put a silencer only on it, I know some people mod the stock one too.

I'll look into shaving the head and we've got and extra clutch to experiment with and porting it.

Read carefully, it's not just shaving the head. You can get aftermarket pipes if you can find them, but you'll spend a lot and only gain a little. Milling the top of the cylinder and modding the exhaust port made a huge difference on the one I worked on.

Where did you get the spacer for the bottom of the cylinder? What had to be done to the exhaust port to gain the most power? How about the intake port?
