I was wondering which is the faster, better handling machine.

1.250X
2.250Ex

Whats the difference? the 250X has a clutch and chain drive, while the 250Ex has a direct drive and semi auto. Is that it?

I believe he is comparing the older manual clutch 250cc TRX (250X) with the newer automatic clutch 250cc TRX (250EX).

This is a tough question.
My first instinct was to say the older 250X, but I have to admit, the newer 250EX has a lot of pep to it.

I used to own an 87 TRX 250X, and have ridden both the 250X and 250EX on the dunes.
I think that would be a good shoot out!

The weight of both quads would also have to be taken into consideration, and since I don't know how much each weighs, I can't help there.

if it is that close of a race I would take the 250ex they have nicer looks and you are more apt to find a nice one. Is the 250ex kick start of electric the x was kick my buddy had one that was bored way over and he weighed 150lbs and could stand on the kick strater and never move it. It moved decent. Neither cost very much.

If I remember correctly, the 250EX is an electric start, and shaft driven. The 250X as you said, is kick start, and chain driven.

At least it is rear kick not like the mojave which is forward those things will eat your a$$ I am limping I was tuning my carb on my quadracer which is for sale in here and the kick hit the compression stroke of the 80 over piston and went back up while my leg was going down. End result 4 inches long and 1/4" deep white meat just like a turkey.

I would think that the newer EX would be a lighter, more nimble, better handling machine. My inlaws had a '91 250X and it was a great machine though.

I have one and indeed it is forward kicking. Yeah, after a few slips I put my riding boots on to kick it. Ouch! As some of you know, it is a project I have going on. It's been somewhat of a hastle to take it apart. Many of the bolts were frozen and I just managed to complete the dis-assembly this weekend. I am taking the parts to my brother-in-law for sandblasting and painting this week. Next week I'll start the re-assembly. I can't attest to the reliabilty or handling of the 250X but my other brother-in-law's sister has a 250ex. Ahhh, it's alright. You get what you pay for. It's a good solid quad. Not terribly quick or fast but that's compared to a Raptor or Banshee and that's not really fair. Usually, I would recommend the newer model because of the parts issue but there are so many parts out there for the older 250X, it shouldn't be an issue. Reliability on these older air-cooled thumpers shouldn't be an issue. I took off the head and cyclinder and they looked new on the inside. Just perform the basic maintence and they should run forever.

As long as it hasn't been abused, you should get years and years of use out of it.
Mine was bullet-proof even up to the day I sold it. I'm sure its new owner is still getting plenty of good use out of it.

Be sure to post pics of it as you are getting it back together!
There is a certain sense of pride when you take something like that, completely tear it down, rebuild it, and paint it.
The 250X is a very good all around quad.

I wouldn't mind getting another one in the future, for family friends, and beginners to use.

That's not the reassurance I was hoping to hear 2fun! Nah, it looks pretty simple. The only question I've had so far was answered by Faded. It's pretty straight forward. But, you never know. Also, you might have a few bits hiding in your memory banks.
