Default Honda Recon 250 Diff Air tight or not?

I have the differential out of my 2002 Recon 250. I was cleaning the inside and noticed the cleaning fluid will come out where the drive shaft connects when the unit is leaned foward. The other seals don't leak. When the diff is installed on the atv the drive shaft end is above level, so no leaking. Is the unit suppose to be airtight, or do I need to replace the seals?

Thanks,

Kevin

I am not 100% on this, but I would assume there should be no leakage from that area. OBviously there will be times when you are going down steep embankments, which would cause that area to be below level (if I'm reading your post correctly). Do the seals look worn at all??

Also, the cleaning fluid you are using is probably a lot thinner that the differential fluid that is normally in there.

Therefore, it is possible that the cleaning fluid may leak while the thicker differential fluid will not. Just something to think about.

Oh, and I see this is your first post, so I'd like to say welcome to ATM!

After further inspection I realized that the differential was only leaking when removed from the ATV because the drive shaft was not installed, which is where the sealing take place. Sorry, my fault, should have looked closer.

Thanks,

Kevin
