If you are using synthetic oil, you can mix it as lean as 40:1, but I would suggest 32:1 or even 24:1 if you are using a petroleum based oil.

Holy cow... I can't believe 2fun hasn't responded... He has 2 of them and can give you all sort of info.

Oh, I just realized this is in the other ATV section. I'll move it to the Honda forum and you should get some more replies ASAP.

Ist off, congrats!

Depending on how it was taken care of prior to your aquisition of it, you may have a great quad indeed!

Many of them have really been abused though!

Some good suggestions have been made here.

Let me add my 2 cents since as Woody_CRF has stated I currently own two, and have owned a total of 4 different 250R's over the years.

Synthetic oils offer superior protection as opposed to the older conventional oils (petroleum).

The 20:1 that is on the tank reflects the types of oils available back in the early to mid 80's.

These oils were inferior to the oils available today.

32:1 is a common ratio that people use today with many petroleum based and even some synthetics.

Oil does more than just lubricate, it also helps the rings to seal for better power.

I have heard of people running a good quality oil at ratios clear down to 16:1 for added power, though I have a hard time believing that there is a huge difference, or even one that would be noticed without a dyno.

I used to use Golden spectro ( a semi-synthetic oil) at a ratio of 40:1 and had excellent results as far as protection goes.

I ran my 330 at this ratio for 2 years, and the cylinder still has the cross hatch marks on much of the cylinder.

I now use Amsoil 2000 fully synthetic at a ratio of 50:1 for 2 years now, and have had no problems with seizure, or premature wear.

A mechanic whom I respect who is also a member of this site (albeit he rarely seems to pop in anymore {HarldlyDangerous})
can attest to the Amsoil also.

I have heard of people running it as lean as 100:1 or more, but for me, I don't feel comfortable stretching it out that thin.

If you don't have any mods to increase the compression, or advance the timing, I would stick with super unleaded for fuel.

Hope this helps.

I've owned several two stoke quads including a 250r I've had for several years now. I've ran them all on 50/1 Golden Spectro for years (and two stroke motorcycles for years before the quads even came out) with 15/50 Mobil synthetic in the transmissions since it came out. Very satisfied with the performance, but I don't skimp on maintenance cycles either. The old 20/1 requirement was partly due to the older oil technology and partly do to hopes of engine longevity (very conservative) by the manufacturers.

Well, I don't think I would go THAT far, but thanks for the compliment anyways!

I'm sure there is still way more that I DON'T know than what I do, but I do pick up little bits of info from time to time that help once in a while.

And you do a damn fine job too 2fun.

There, that is the end of my complimenting, now I will resume the normal "pic on 2fun" mode.
