I have a 2001 Polaris Scrambler x500 2x4 4-stroke... I rode it all the time, until last month, I parked it, then went out about a week or so later to ride again, and it dies every time I crack the throttle. It will start up effortlessly, on the first pull, and idle fine, but as soon as I even barely crack the throttle, it will die. I checked to make sure there aren't any air leaks between the carb and airbox and carb-to-head. All my hoses and lines appear to be fine. I also have a 2001 Polaris Scrambler 400 4x4 2-stroke, and a 2003 KTM 250SX dirt bike, and am fairly adept in jetting 2 strokes... but this is the first 4 stroke I have owned... and have never messed with 4 stroke jetting... so I hope that isn't the problem. Any help on this is GREATLY appreciated! Thanx!!

Weak Spark plug Make sure water and mud haven't accumulated on top of it. This happens on the four stroke bikes.

I would check to make sure none of the carburator orifices are gummed up or clogged. Also check the floats to make sure they are not stuck. As was mentioned, it wouldn't hurt to throw a new spark plug in there either.

I put a new plug in there, a NGK BR8ES.... I also have some B8EG's for my bikes, would that be a better plug? Also have some BR7ES's. The carb seems to be clean, and no hoses are clogged, I removed them and sprayed carb/choke cleaner through all of them... Still doing the same thing Thank you SO much for your replies!

Ok, I just found out (online, lost my manual) that my bike is supposed to have an NGK BKR6E.... and the only plugs I keep are cheap BR8ES's and some B8EG's for my race bikes... hopefully this is part of the problem... Going to get one today. As for the other things, my tank vent is fine, and my floats seem fine. The fuel is brand new, 93 octance pump gas w/ some STP booster in it. Also, kinda off topic, but I just traded some computers and $1000 for another bike yesterday... a 2001 Polaris Scrambler 400 4x4.... I thought I might sell it and make some money, or keep it if its a good bike... it runs really strong, and is in practically mint condition... what are your opinions on this bike? Is it a keeper or should I sell it? Thanx so far for ALL the help!!!

As far as the New purchase, I cannot comment too much on the Polaris. I have always been partial to Honda/Yamaha myself. |

Ok, I am getting really really frustrated now. I took this bike APART, plastic, gas tank, airbox, carb, everything. I cleaned the carb from top to bottom, replaced all the breather hoses, and even put in new fuel lines! I put a brand new plug in it, and new gas. Took a LONG time to do all this, Why can Polaris make their bikes like the japanese ones???? So you dont have to take the whole friggin thing apart just to get to the carb!!! lol Put it all back together. Started it up on the first pull. Let it idle for a couple minutes. Barely cracked open the throttle... killed the engine. Is there ANYTHING else that could cause this? I am running out of hope for this thing Thanx for all the help so far!

have you checked the spacing on your ETC? often time when the cable stretch's out the ETC falls out of adjustment. the ETC is the Electronic Throttle Control which is a protection device used for safety, pop off the cover to the throttle cable, there is two metal contacts, are they touching or do they have space in them? do you have a repair manual? i have some details on adjustmenting this if you need. i could email them to you or fax them to you! let me know! im pretty fluent with the polaris generation 3 atvs.

I had a similar problem on my 2005. Found that the battery was bad, and wasn't allowing it to run, idle fine but hit gas and die.

battery alone shouldnt have been the issue, the bike can run just fine once started, if a charging issue became an issue then the machine would kill the battery dead. but other issues would be cullprit! merry christmas yall!

....And being that he said he pull starts it this may be the case, but it would be a longshot unless the charging system is also not working properly.. My 2006 Scrammy runs like that if I power wash it, try to use some WD 40 on the electronics, it may help.. |
