Why would you choose one over the other? I personally ride only thumb throtles and prefer them over twists. I have ridden twists and they just dont feel right. Going over bumps makes you hit the throtle so I am asking why would you choose one from the other.

Im guessing you are talking about quads?? But after riding full days on my buddies quads, Id much rather prefer the twist. It seems like it was hard to even keep my thumb pushed on the throttle b/c my forearms were so tired. JMO though.

I used to ride quads all the time and if I rode hard long enough my thumb up to my forearm would pump up. Since I've had my bike, I haven't had trouble because of the twist. But, then again, I've never ridden a quad with a twist throttle, so what do I know? I think it just comes down to personal preference. And if you give it enough time going from one to the other, it will eventually feel natural.

I have had both on ATV's and I prefer the twist. The problem that alot of people have with atv's and the twist is when turning they seam to want to twist the throttle....for me it was never an issue though.

I use to race quad hare scrambles,, the thumb throttle was fine for trail and play riding but would just kill my right forearm when racing.. I switched to twist and was much happier.. There can be some issues with control of the twist throttle going over bumps, jumps and turning, but it happens mostly when sitting relaxed while riding, if up and standing in attack position while racing it is not as much an issue.. Just like on a bike.

I had a twist on mine for about 1 1/2 years and really liked it in the dunes and on the bigger MX tracks. But I wrecked because of it on a tighter more technical track. I came out of a rough whoop section right into a jump and didn't get squared up right on the pegs, on landing I landed off the side of the quad a bit which caused me to throttle up and the quad launched out from under me. After that I switched back to the thumb. I think this becomes more likely as you start getting fatigued, or if you push your limits of control on a quad. You have to learn to grip your quad more with your legs with the twist, similar to how you would ride a bike. Twists are fun though.. Last edited by Kev_CR; 12-20-2004 at 03:03 PM.

I have ridden with both on my quad and after you spend time you learn not to twist the throttle when you jump you get more control just like on the bike I have both and love the twist on both the thumb it less versitile and only works on one position with the twist i can juice it from the top if needed. It mainly what you perfer.

twist throttle for sure, i thought the same thing with twist throttles when i had a quad, i thought they werent safe and that ever little bump i hit i would accidently pin it. but i was wrong, you are more likley to do that with a thumb throttle, but you have more muscle in your forarm and wrist then you do in your thumb...

well, personally i dont care much for the twist on a quad. they have them thumb extenders that help get rid of that pesky thumb cramp while racing or riding real hard. but if i were to get a bike just to ride around on at the track or at home, the twist would be a much needed break. main reason i dont want twist on my quad, i ride real hard and pull back on the bars a ton to get all the grip i can on the rear tires. once i get out of shape, i can let go of the thumb and slow down if need be. but if i were to try to let go of a twist to slow down while pulling back so hard... well that would be impossible since i dont want to hit a rut with only one arm. see what i mean?

Exactly my point. Im sticking with my good old thumb throttle, my thumb muscles are big enough by now any way. I just wanted to see others opinions.

I am a fan of the thumb throttle for a couple reasons. Turning is easier give it the gas, especially if turning right. I don't like to have to twist my whole entire arm while trying to accelerate as I'm also trying to hold onto the quad (makes my left arm real tired in a hurry). I also don't like the reaction in whoops. I'm sure you could get used to it, but the few times I've used one I didn't like it.

Thumb throttle gets my vote. Especially for whoops and hill climbs/treeshots. Too easy to give it too much gas at the most in-opportune time with a twist throttle. Yeah my thumb gets tired, but if you ride often enough, it is not an issue.

ATV's Sleds, trikes, watercraft don't use twists for two reasons, Control and ease of riding. ATV's sled and watercraft are more often used by all levels of skilled riders more them motorcycles are and thumb throttle are much easier to control for beginner riders and easier to control in over throttle and panic situations. Also With a motor cycle most of your turning is done by leaning the bike. Where other machines it requires turning the bars much greater amounts I personally like thumb throttles better and if I could, and not get made fun of by my riding buddies I would put a thumb throttle on the dirt bikes. I can and do ride with both but feel I have better control with a thumb. Even after 25 years of riding I still get bent out of shape in the whoops and rough stuff with a twist and I don't have near the control while doing wheelies that i do with a thumb throttle. It all comes down to personal preference as to witch you choose to use

I'll leave my throttles right where they are. For quads, thumb works best, for bikes, the twist is more preferable to me. I have tried a twist on a quad but never a thumb on a bike, but I can only imagine the confusion it would cause.
