Default Hour Meter install!!

With permission from the author who wrote this up (vorra65 from YFZtech), I am going to post it here.
This was done for the YFZ450, but I would imagine it would apply to other ATVs/Birtbikes as well.
2fun.

Installed a Hobb's digital hour meter Sunday. Took about 30 min. and it work's slick. Tapped into a key on circuit, soldered and then re-taped the harness. Then made a mounting out of dense cell foam-put it where that cheesy little tool kit went. Logged 1.9 hr. of seat time yesterday. Napa (balkamp) part # is 701-1387, paid like $35 for it.

This pic show's where I put the hr. meter, in the hole where the tool kit would go. I used some foam, to make kind of an impromptu mount for it. I have sinced moved the hr. meter, after I built my aluminum battery box.I put it up on the frame by the top shock mount, just behind the fuel tank. I've been under the weather, so I'll try to get some pic's of the new location to you soon. As far as wiring the thing, just find a wire that is hot only when the key is in the on position. The other wire would go to grd. I grabbed a wire that is in the white modular plug on the relay for the starter. I tapped into it for my hot side, and went to the frame for the ground. Hope this helps.

Having the hr. meter, takes all of the guess work out of service intervals.

I had the trail tech computer on my old Raptor and wish I had one now on my YFZ. They also keep the mileage you've traveled. I found that handy for knowing when I would be running low on fuel. I think they have a new one coming out that has a tach and some other options.

Yup they keep track of hours too. Both total hours and trip hours if you want. Plus they'll track hours or milage between oil changes. They're pretty cool, but before I get another for my YFZ I have some other stuff to buy

Well, looks like I may have to hold off on the hour meter install and apply that 35 bucks to a 70+ dollar Trail Tech computer!!!

Sounds like you get the best of BOTH worlds with the Trail Tech, and with Woody_YFZ being a dealer and all...................................

Hmmmm.................. (Rubs chin while in deep thought)

I know the Trail tech is for bikes also. I just assumed there'd be no reason why you couldn't use the hour meter set-up for a bike also.

Just FYI, these trailtech computers (and other trailtech parts) can be purchased through the ATM store. The motorcycle computer is $65.

Is that for the ATV computer too, or are there differen't prices between the two?

Yes, for the computer itself it's the same price. This doesn't include the mounting protector or ATV dashboard. For the YFZ with 7/8" bars you are looking at $65 more and $85 for the 1 1/8" dashboard.

You can mount the computer without the dashboard too, but the dashboard does look better. On my old Raptor I mounted the computer to the plastic handle bar cover. I did eventually by the dashboard. If you still have the plastic handle bar cover on the YFZ I would bet you could mount it without the dashboard.

Well that adds a bit to the price eh??

I may have to hold off on that a little bit longer.

I guess I didn't realize the mounting plate was a separate purchase.

The computer does come with a mounting bracket, the ATV dashboard just makes it prettier and encases it into a nice frame.

I run a tiny tack on the YZ and my street bike

They have both an our meter and tachometer and cost $50-$70
VERY simple wiring, One wire to a frame ground the other wire wraps arounf the spakplug wire. That's it!

Very accurate however the tach is a cruise tach in that it up dates the RPM reading every 1.5- 2 seconds.
