You also need to ask why they are leaking (assuming it is crank seals). Yes, it could be a simple matter of the crank seals having gone bad and leaking. Or, it could be that the crank bearings have had it and are now allowing the crank to move too much, resulting in oil getting past the seals. If that's the case, then you need a new bottom end.

hmmm I have not done anything on the LT80 yet, but I'm still a little confused about the crank seal. This atv does not have a crank case like you have on a 2-stroke dirt bike. I takes no crank oil or tranny oil. I understand the word "transmisson" and that you have to get the power to the back wheels but the LT does not have gears and again there is no oil. It's like a big weed-eater engine. So considering there is no crank case oil at least separate from the fuel mix, where does a seal com in to play causing excessivce smoke?

If you are satisfied that there is no transmission oil, then the seal spoken of wont be your problem. Some of us, me included, are not familiar enough with that particular engine. That really only leaves the float. I think I suggested that, and I am surprised that you havent done anything along that line in the meantime.

I didn't focus on that reply because I thought it was directed to the other guys message. Like I said in on of my earlier posts, my initial thought was the carb, I got sidetracked a little thinking along the lines of crank seal. And that was about the extent of it "thinking". And the more I think the less convinced I am of any seal because as you put it. I am satisfied there is no crank case oil. What I did was I turned it upside down and shook the hell out of it. No oil poured out it so I figure there ain't any. So.... considering a seal to be out of the picture, you think float huh? lol

How does that work (no tranny oil)? Is it an external clutch/belt arrangement like a snowmobile? A PW50 has no gears, but it does have oil in the "transmission" to lube the bearings on the output shaft and such. I'm definitely curious as to how they built this drivetrain to not need any internal oil at all other than what is injected into the gasoline.

Float levels change as the engine is in use. When the level gets much higher than stock, you get an over rich condition which can cause smoking as you indicate. If you ever watched a motorcycle race on TV you can bet that everyone that made the main had theirs checked and set before the race you are watching, and they will before the next race too. Floats are a maintenance item. In the time you have taken on this thread you could have read Faded's post on how to set one and had it done. Again, if you are convinced on the seal, then try the float. Another thing, when someone tells me that they cleaned a carburetor and then can't tell me if they removed and cleaned the needle jet and or needle jet holder (if such items are present) I really wonder what they actually cleaned. (If you are unfamiliar, the needle jet is generally brass, and is what the needle on the carburetor slide rides up and down in. While you are in there make sure that whatever enrichening device you have to aid starting is clean and seating properly. I like your test for transmission oil!! I would have just looked for a plug anywhere in the bottom and a place to fill it.

I am familiar with the LT80, but not that familiar with how this particular engine works, so I will move it to the ATV forums where perhaps one of the ATV guys can give you a hand?

Also, the LT does have a tranny, it's just an auto tranny. And for clarification on my part, what did you use to gage that the compression is ok?

The compression test was done by a guy who knows a lot more about this stuff than I do. His kids races atv's and he's got an awsome set of tools. I'm gonna pull the carb.
