| I have an old XR600 and the engine is covered in baked on california red clay and I've tried everything to get it off but to no avail. I'm thinking about using a sand blaster to remove the crap. What I need to know is, are they coated with anything to keep them from corroding and oxidizing? and will sand blasting remove the coating? And if It did, what could I put on it insted of using black engine paint, or should I blast it and just leave it bare? Last edited by nate650; 12-02-2003 at 11:48 PM. |

| Dont sandblast it, if you must have it blasted, go with something other than sand. Sandblasting isnt the best thing for aluminum. They have glass bead blastin as well as I have seen blasters that use walnut shells. This stuff will take it off, and be easier on the aluminum than sand will be. I have used steel wool on my xr400 and it worked fine for getting the baked on mud stains. With it being painted like it is it would work, then you could try coating it with some barbeque paint. | Try using walnut shells if you can. They take a little longer but will do less damage than sand. Have you looked into getting your engine powdercoated? You can get quite a few different trick colors and it is very durable, look into seeing if that is possible. 1984 xr 500r |

| I have not tried it yet, but try oven cleaner. My wife was using the other day on this burnt out old oven at her friends and it was amazing, soon as I saw it was, engines. I will try next time for sure. Besides how much does a can cost even if it doesnt work. |
