The right time is as soon as you can pay for it! Do a little refinancing. Or a home equity loan or line of credit Just kidding! If you can buy it out right.. thats best! Even though all our bikes aren't paid for, I think 80% of them are.

Alex: That all depends on your riding skill & what type of riding you do? Do your ride trails or race? what type of racing do you do if you race? Are you using all of the power that the 250 has? How big are you? Need to know these before I can answer.

I am in the same predicament. What type of riding do you do? I am in trails and I am getting worn out riding my kx250. It is also hard for me to get in the powerband all the time when I need it. A 4 stroke has the power all the time whenever you need it.

I have both and find I ride the 2 smoker more, not saying the linear power is great but I love clutching and feeling the burst and it seems to move around in the trees better. When she gets in the open it is as fast as I can handle, tractability(don't know if that is a word or not) is not as good but just seem to love what is has. I don't MX race so it really isn't an issue and I can smoke every quad I have every been up against so that is always cool and it wheelies as good as it gets. I never have overheating problems, whereas if slow going the 4 stroke doesn't like that at all. The AMA is having 2 stroke divisions in the amateur ranks next year so I really am hoping this will help save an endangered species. I have been pleasantly surprised by how many people change to the 4 to switch back to the 2. If I was looking for the Factory contract I think things would be different but I just a casual, fanatical, moto rider.

the only people I know that love two strokes are the ones who havnt ridden a thumper yet! If you can afford it, get the 450 as soon as possible. I was new to this and everyone said get the 450, i said its to much bike, but after three bikes I finally got my 450 and LOVE IT!! Before my 450 I had a 426, great power, but heavy and crappy suspension set up that I was never able to get to work for me. The new 450's feel so light when you are riding them and the power is great, its controllable, it doesnt just come on unless you make it. I dont like two strokes cause they were you out faster, you always have to be "on it" to get the power and they are not smoothe. Screw responsibility, just go buy one, thats what I always do!!!

Dont get me wrong, I love my 426, still torn between selling it or turning it into a steet bike next spring. I just happen to love my 450 way more. Its like that old girlfriend that was fun for a while, but now you got some new hotness that does all the right things. You still love the old one, just not as much as the new one.

Noo has a new toy and is overly enthusiastic about it right now so I will leave him alone for the moment. But if he lived on the eastern side of the river I would love to take him out with me to the tight stuff and see how "not worn out" on his 450 he would be for a 3-4 hour stroll in the park. Over head valves make people get "A little over there head" or should I say a little in front of their vocal cords.

you so crazy. I live in the Rocky Mountains and we ride some technical stuff. If I could do it on my 426, its going to be a breeze on my 450. I have friends that have two smokers, and they sound just like you, that is until they ride our thumpers. All converts now. You just cant be the smoothe tork of the thumper. You can hear those 250 two smokes winding it out to try and make it up some of the stuff, we just blurp our throttle and go. hill climbs? Aint nothing but a thang, two smokes cant make it though!!! There is a reason two smokes are being phased out, slowly. They still make them appease the ones that refuse change, whacky liberals complain about there smoke, and most everyone who has ridden a thumper doesnt want to get back on there two smoke, they just say they do so they dont make their bike cry. but you gotta be strong man, gotta tell that bike you aint happy no more and gotta new love now. I cant wait till my boy is taller so I can move him up to a 150f, hopefully yami starts making them soon cause I am not a fan of red. |

I am sure there are those that can and can't use the clutch for correct power delivery. I work a lot with my son on up hill soft sand so that he doesn't need the crutch of throttle only delivery. I know it is complicated to ensure your in the right gear and body position to handle the forces, with just the right amount of clutch pressure. Some want to take the easier road not needing to hone their skills but would rather place it in the hands of the machine rather than on their own shoulders. I understand the "easy way out" idea but other as in archery want to stay tradition relying on the their instincts, natural skills, and not on the advancements that make them Dependant upon. Using the rotors, brake pads and correct pressure to ensure you rear wheel does not brake loose is tough and takes lots of time and effort that not all of us can afford. So much easier to let the Anti- lock braking system of the engine to slow you down. Much easier to get your body up front when accelerating and hey if not perfect don't worry about you have time to get there. You know I am just joking I have a crf450 with a rekluse clutch so I am just playing Devil's advocate. But I do love my CR and will not be leaving the stable any time soon. I told my son he won't be getting a 4 stroker for a long time he will need to learn to handle the 2 stroke before he goes to the easier machine! Last edited by dhighlan; 10-05-2007 at 11:51 AM.
