For the record my son's CR250 2-stroke's piston just came apart causing both engine cases to break. If I was to try to buy the cases and all other required parts new it would set me back over $700 with me doing the labor.

I was intending on pulling it apart and visually inspecting it within the next couple of weeks too, though the compression still tested good.

Thats sucks. Ichaned the reeds on my 500 one time. Just happened to look in towards the piston and saw a huge crack. Boy way I lucky. Could have been costly. Sorry about the bad luck Kev.

What, exactly were you looking for when you started this thread?
I think it was a basic question about how to avoid these costly repairs especially valve replacement. So I think it was answered in the two statements:

1) Keep up on your maintenance and adjustments.

If you are racing this bike, I would get in the habit of checking valve clearances religiously between race days. (Note, I said race days, not races)

2) Keep off the Rev limiter.

You have to watch out for the 4 vs 2 stroke stuff that goes on. When you start with, "I am beginning to hate 4 strokes", then all the 2 stroke guys start licking their chops to chime in.

Me, I have both and love them for what they are designed to do.
The 4 stokes for their smooth confidant delivery of power and the 2 strokes for their lightness and wild, snappy power.

And dont get too upset with the guys on this forum. We all love to talk smack and bench race. Its just part of being a guy. Wait, Char talks a good smack once in a while too, just ask Motoman.

I'm not sure why it busted up.. It had about 50 hrs on it, I knew I should have inspected it sooner.

I guess that's the way it goes sometimes. I ended out buying a '97 engine for it for $400 with all electical and the carb. I'll put a fresh top end in it and sell the remaining parts and should come out ok.

If you dont want to deal with valve issues, then dont ride red or go back to two strokes. My friend has an 08 CRF450 and he is on his 3rd set of valves, isnt even a racer. We suspect in this case that the K&N filter he was running was letting fine dust thru. Honda is a great bike, but it is very common with the Honda & Kawi to have valve issues. Yamahas practically have no valve issues . But they turn like crap and have no mid range punch. I almost purchased my son a cr150r and the decision to buy a yz85 was the repair bills. I can afford to rebuild his 85 much more so then I can a thumper rebuild. However, he rides his friends cr150r and wont stop bothering me for one cause he loves the smoothe power.
