ok i just got done rebuilding my 03 crf 450. i ended up putting a 12:1 piston instead of the 11.5:1 which was in it before. when i put it back together im almost possitive i got the timing marks dead on. ok so what its doing is when i get up to about half throttle it acts like its rev limiting and wont put out no more power. its really hard to get it to kick start but fires right up when i roll it off. so i feel like it could be like one tooth off on timing but i dunno. so anyone run into this or got ideas?

Also you should re-check the timing anyway. |

Yeah, I would recheck the timing and valves adjustment. It's not hard, and it would be worth the piece of mind.

i just rebuilt the whole motor in my 450, its an 02. used the same piston in mine. i had some problems like you are explaining and my timing was off, if the cam chain is streched a little, it will be hard to get it lined up right. what i did was get it where i thought it was and then i pushed the cam tensioner in with my finger and if the marks lined up then i was good to go. but i ended up timing mine bout 3 times before i got it right. also deffinately check the valves, but i would say it is for sure the timing. hope this helps.

im going to throw this out, but wouldn't a bike do this when you dont take the slack out of the cam chain properly when its at TDC hits trowing the timing off and making the chain extremely tight? Im talkin about if you didnt even take the tensioner out or just put it back on without backing the tension off?

You need Honda's chain tensioner tool when removing and replacing the cam. The one for the CRF250 is P/N 07AMG-001A100. Not sure but I think it's the same for the 450 and it's in your service manual.

Do you understand the tool? Go back and read your #5 post. If you don't take the tension off the chain, the cam gear will not come out nor will you get the chain off. That is what the tool does bud and holds the tension off the chain. What does that $85 dollar tool do for you....can you guess now? Mine was cheaper.

I'm fully aware of what the tool does I'm not 3 lol. But what I'm trying to say is why should I waste that money when i can just take a flat head screw driver take the tension off then take the tensioner itself off? Then to put the tensioner back in, take the tension off the tensioner again and put the tensioner in holding the tension backed off tighten it down get the timing lined up on all 3 marks and holding the cam sprocket on the marks release the screw driver? I'm just pointing out how I do it, theres no need to try and fuss at me because I dont want to spend 83 dollars on a tool that a 2 dollar screw driver can do if used right. You know what I'm saying? Just throwing my 2cent out there.
