grabit buying a used 250 four-stroke

I was wondering if buying a used 250 four-stroke is a good idea. How can you tell if it has been taken care of? What year is a good 250 four-stroke?

That is tough to tell. If you are buying from the owner (not a dealer) you can sometimes throw out a general question like,” Is it expensive to change oil for the whole summer?” and “ How long does it take to change oil?”. Pay close attention to the answer they give and this sometimes tells a lot. If you can, look at the air filter and even remove it and feel for grit in-between the inlet and carb. Gab the top of the back tire and shake it from side to side to make sure the swing arm is tight. Check the fork seals, clutch, rear brake pads, and rear brake lever.

Looking at the cam lobes will tell you more than any question will about how well it has been taken care of lubricationwise. In the end it wont matter if he did change his oil (or didnt) if there has been accelerated wear due to other conditions. Scored or cams will discolored wear areas can signal that kind of abuse.

Just like buying anything used. You have to ask "why are you selling it?" Does it look like they've taken care of it, or is it thrashed? Look for leaks, ask about maintenance, and anything they've done to it recently. Make sure it fires right up and test it out. Nothing wrong with buying used. One persons misfortune can be another persons treasure.

The outward appearance of the bike tells alot about the appearance of the innards. It it looks like it was not cared for then it probably was not.

ossagp - People actually let you rip their bike apart before you buy it? I wouldn't let anybody touch my bike with a wrench until the check clears.
