Hi, was wondering if anyone had any expierience with removing sprayed on black paint from exspansion pipes. Bought the bike already like this so dont know which type of paint it is, i presume just VHT paint. Its a DEP pipe so just wanted to take it back to polished crome underneath.

You should be able to find a chemical paint remover, at most any auto parts or hardware store. Brush it on, hose it off and buff it up...should be chrome safe but I believe most pipes are polished nickel, you ain't gonna' hurt that.

I use two different techniques for this. 1. Blast the paint off with Aluminum
Oxide (AO) in a blast cabinet then polish the bare metal with a buffer and
rouge. Or 2. Strip the paint with TAL II Aircraft finish stripper. It is available
from O'Reilly or Advance Auto Parts and comes in an aerosol can. Spray it
on and let it work for 30 minutes, use a putty knife to scrape the residue
from the problem areas then wash off everything with a pressure washer.
Finally, buff it out.

I agree, the aircraft stripper works great.

You have to ask yourself why it was painted in the first place. Odds are there was rust and or a dent that he used JB weld on to fill, then painted the pipe to blend it in.
The aircraft paint remover is incredably good. Ive used it on many projects. Be careful it burns the beeegeeeebers out of anything covered with skin, i.e. you.

Let us know how it turns out.
