Default Piston Rings

I just put on cylinder with a fresh piston and rings, but Im afraid that I didnt completely have one of the rings closed into the gruve all the way and is now out of place in the cylinder. does this make any sense to anyone or am I retard? if the ring(s) are not where they are suppose to be would I of been able to put the piston into the cylinder and or are the rings going to mess up the inside of the cylinder? someone PLEASE HELP ME!!!! thanks

My first impression would be that it would not slide down into the cylinder if the ring did not go into the groove.

If you are not sure, it is always best to take the cylinder off and check again!

What type of ATV are we talking here?

I would think it wouldnt slide into the cylinder but ya never know, this is a 04 CR250. I would take everything apart and check, but it didnt dawn on me untill I hooked everything back up and put fluid in it

Since this is a 2-stroke dirt bike, I am going to move this thread to the 2-stroke dirt bike forums.

You'll probably get more responses from qualified people over there.

Just pull it apart take the ring off and do it again!
It isn't easy but you can do it. Struth I managed to do it!
Just be carefull as you slide the barrel down over the rings
There is a tiny guide pin in the groove of the rings for them to close into the correct position. I think that if you can get the barrel on I think they must have slid into the correct position.
Correct me if I'm rong anyone!
I don't know if you can slide a barrel on with the rings on top off the guide pin in the piston ring groove!
If you lined them up and slid the barrel down chances are the ring slipped into position especially if you slightly twisted the barrel as it went on!

Right now, im holding an OE Honda piston with incorrectly installed rings from a 2004 CR250. If the ring gap is not placed around the pin, then there is no chance that you could get it into that cylinder. If the ring is placed over the pin in the ring groove, the ring would stick out over 3mm into the cylinder and would not clear the cylinder walls, either that, or it would hang up on one of the many ports. Unless your cylinder has been over bored more than 2mm, which is alot, and you are installing a stock bore piston, it would not fit. My bet is that you either did install the rings properly or the ring slid into place when you installed the piston in the cylinder. Did you use a ring compresser? If you are truely concerned, I'd tear the top end down again, which is easy on a 2 stroke. Otherwise, if feel that you might have installed the rings correctly, then just fire it up. If the rings are not propely seated then it will score up the cylinder bad, or the ring could catch a port, neither of which would be very good. If your in doubt, it doesnt hurt to check it over. But once again, I do not see how the rings would compress enough to fit into the cylinder.

I use eric gorrs method of puting the piston in on the workbench and putting the whole thing onto the crancase. I line everything up and and slip the pin in place and do the circlip. its pretty easy and you wont be pulling yiour hair out.

HondaOnly - why should I use a ring compressor? what does that do? Thank you for your help with the ring, I am going to tear it apart and double check just to be safe! I would really hate for my cylinder to get jacked up or break a piece off and i drop into the crank! Thank you again

A piston ring compresser compresses the rings and holds them in the ring groove. This allows you to put the end of the ring compresser on the inside wall of the cylinder and quickly and easily tap the piston into the cylinder with a rubber mallet. A ring compresser is an excellent tool for doing rebuids. After doing a few top ends without one, it gets pretty annoying. When you reassemble the top end, make sure the gap in the ring is centered around the pin in the ring groove. This prevents the rings from rotating while the bike is running, not to mention, if the rings are not installed as such, the piston will not go in very easily, if at all.
