Default New 2 stroke owner needs advice.

Hi after owning large 4 stroke road bikes for many years, I have just bought a little 96 Yamaha DT175 in near new condition and feel I may need some advice.

I bought it mainly as a trail bike but as the thing is registered i have decided to use it as a commuter on the road as well.

It obviously revs a lot higher than bikes I've had before, about 5000rpm to do 80k's an hour. It doesn't seem to be stressed or noisey or anything but is this a comforatble rev range for the bike to sit at. I'd never need or expect the bike to go faster than this so I'm happy if it is happy.

The first week I started riding it, I was trying to take it easy, but it seems like it is happier if you wind it out through the gears a bit and keep the revs up to it. What is the best way t ride a 2 stroke?

What sort of life expectancy could I expect from the engine under normal circumstances? How many k's would I expect to get out of the engine before any major work was needed?

I think the obvious answer to many of my questions is by an XR500 or somethig a bit bigger, and that will be my plan in the coming years but picked this baby up for next to nothing in perfect condtion and it's quite adequate for what I need and is nice and light to throw on the trailer etc.

Hope someone can help, kind regarsd, Craig

Hello!
The revs are fine! 2strokes love high revs and so do their riders. Why do you think you're always smiling when you get off that bike

The bike should do good for a pretty good time ifn serviced properly But it's not a 4 stroke when the kiker start feeling weak its time to ring or bore! ENJOY

my kx125 wants nothing but winding threw the gears all day, if i don't give it the high revs the plug gets fouled. If the trails you ride are not to tight its fine, it loves the street riding.
