flasher My opinions on the Honda CR 500R....

Well, after much headaches getting my carb in tune, she runs! She starts first to second kick every time!

Now, I haven't had a dirtbike since I was 12 (1989 Yamaha DT 50) and the only other bike I had between the Yamaha and the Honda CR 500R was a Honda CBR 600F3 I bought new when I was 19.

Now, after riding this beast (trails with long straits, some rough terrain) I love it! First through third gear is tire spin and wheelies, fourth gear hauls azz, and fifth can be scary at WOT! It's crazy how hard this thing pulls in fifth gear! It's got more power than anyone needs on dirt for sure!

I was thinking at the end of my ride today -- why anyone would want a smaller CC bike (unless you're not an adult, or not fully grown). My opinion is "All men should own a 2 stroke 500cc dirtbike!"

Sorry I had to make it so short folks, kind of short on time.

Regards,
John

Cuz 500s arent good for everything...there probly best at sand...A 500 is too much for a motocross track.

I don't ride in sand (live in TN) and I don't race MX. I ride trails, farm land, and soon some of the popular off roading places near me.

I guess if you don't like a 500, it's your opinion/choice.

: All I have to say is that they are too much for YOU on a MX track, not me!! I used to have a buddy that let me ride his all the time (an '87 CR500), and I loved it at all my tracks!

They didn't know how to adjust a carb. : I took it back a 3rd time (reluctantly) and demanded either the $96 labor back, or they fix it. They chose to fix it. When I got it back, no more fuel pouring out of the float bowl over flow, but still was a bit hard to start (5 Bruce Lee kicks cold) and idled high. I turned the idle air and fuel down a bit and now she starts right up!

Lets see, $123, 3 trips to Honda, 2 weeks in the shop first time, 2 days the next, and made one trip because they lost my trans drain plug and loaded the bike in my truck with no plug or trans oil. : I'm going to learn how to do "All" the work on this bike so I never have to go through that crap again!

Just doesn't fit the type of riding I do, but for what you are using it for, I'm sure it rocks.

Glad you like it..I would like to try a 500 2-stroke...either a KX or CR....but my CR250R has PLENTY of power....still spooks me sometimes..usually atleast once every ride....hanging on to my 250 all day is a job..I couldn't imagine a 500:

So how close is the CRF450 to a CR 500R? Have you rode side by side with one? I'd like to know how close the 450's are now.

My understanding is they are pretty close, but the Major difference is the Hit of the 500, where as the 450 is smooth as silk.

Don't let this mislead you though. Some folks prefer the hit (like me) that a 2 stroke has.

I still need to ride a new RFS before I can comment on their power delivery.

It's cool, I asked the same question not too long ago also. I had a little break from the dirtbike scene then came back to find out the RFS practically took over!

Taken over in sales, or taken over by having the most performance and winning? I'm new to this Dirtbike stuff too man! Guess I should watch MX racing on TV or something.

From what I understand the new 4 strokes are outselling 2 strokes. Which one is better? Well...I'm not even going to go there.

I ride a 2 stroke and love it. I'm gonna rally mine while I can, who knows what the future holds.

I hear ya! I'll keep this bike forever, and buy/run 2 strokes as long as they make them!
