Default Just got an 89' yz250, ran into a couple problems...

This is actuall my first dirt bike, and i'm really lost on what to do. I took it out for a ride today, and it doesn't seem to be running right; it has a rought idle and while riding it bogs down a lot and doesn't seem like it is getting full power. Also, sometimes when i come to a stop, it just dies with the clutch engaged. oh, and i got it a couple days ago and it started fine, and i had started it a few times yesterday in the garage for fun, and when i got out to the dirt today, it would not start, and when it finally did, it shot oil out of the exhaust pipe. I'm not sure if I did it right, but i hooked up a compression tester where the spark plug would be and tried to kickstart it. the highest compression that I got was about 90 psi.. Any help would be appreciated. Cool Forum!

Thanks,

Kris

Hey congrats on your first dirtbike.... YZ250's are great bikes Here a few tips for your bike...

First of all , your compression is kinda low... Maybe you didn't take it correctly... You have to hook up the tester in your spark plug hole then hold the throttle in wide open position and kick it over a few times... It should be above 120 psi minimum. Sound like it's time for a top end rebuild...

Your clutch issue is probably because your clutch cable isn't well adjusted.

Your throttle response and idle problems are probably because of a badly adjusted carb or a dirty carb...

The oil coming out of your exhaust pipe is called spooge which is caused by running your bike too richly (the premix or the carb jetting is off.) Or another cause is because of a bad crank seal... If it would be the crank seal, you would be having thick white smoke out of your exhaust....

Also make sure that your air filter is clean, and that you do the maintenance right. Transmission oil change, air filter cleaning, grease and lube the chain and other parts....

Hope this helps ya out! Keep us updated!
