Crank bearing removal

What do the rest of you use (for tools) to remove crank bearings that have remained on the crankshaft when you split the case (magneto side).

The manual states to use a special bearign sepertor, but it's not cheap. I don't plan on re-using the bearing.. so I don't care if I damage it, but I don't want to damage the crank.

it's on there pretty tight.
How do the rest of you do it?

You pretty much have to use a bearing separator.

You definately do not want to bang up the crank - handle with extreme care and use the correct tools.

Here's a video from RMATV that shows how to do it using their Tusk brand of separator. It's fairly cheap from them I'm pretty sure.

ironically, I have one of those, but it doesn't seem to fit right behind the bearing (not enough room). Although when I watch this video, I notice that the tool doesn't need to get all the way behind it like i thought.

The vid says it all.

The only addition I would suggest is to use a "center saver" where the puller contacts the crankshaft. Or just use a soft piece of material to keep the shaft center in pristine condition for future use.

Awesome, I hope that works out for you then! I'd like to buy all of those specialty tools from them so I can rebuild my bottom end, but that's around $180 for 3 tools!

I actually just order the flywheel/clutch holder as well as the crank seperator tool. I had made my own to split the case, but getting the crank out of the other side is a challenge, this tool will get it on.

I wonder if I should have ordered the crank installer as well!! I'll just stick the case in the oven and the crank in the freezer like I've done previously.
I hope I get this thing running soon again.

Does anyone know if the TUSK crank installer will work with a Crank that does not have ANY thread on the primary gear side? (none inside or out).

Just a few hours ago I had your problem with no bearing splitter. I do have a pipe vise though. I heated the bearing gently under a propane torch and then clamped the bearing in the pipe vise and tapped the end of the crank with hammer and a small wood block and the crank gently pushed out. Viola worked great.
