Hello Iam new to ATM Anyway I have drivin quads all my life ive had blasters banshees and warrior and right now i have a raptor. But iam selling it. I would be getting YFZ450 but i dont have the money since iam only 15. so iam looking for something with more preformance then the raptor but cheaper then YFZ450 or YZ450F. so ive come to the conclusion its a 2 stoke and iam pretty sure its gona be a 250 becuase i was not imopressed when i drove my friends yz 125. so my question is what would be better for a 15 yr old iam 5'8 180 and looking into getting a dirtbike for the first time. Also what one is light and with one is more reliable. also can u buy over sized tanks for these 2 stroke bike becuase i will be ridding extended trail rides and gravel pits manily no mx. thnx

the 125 is the most common starter bike if you havent ridden very much you would want to start out small dirtbikes are a lot different than quads I have one of each it is a walk in the park to ride th quad but an endless battle to ride in the woods on a dirtbike not that I am complaning I love two wheels and they are a lot more manuverable. If you just have to have a 250 I would buy the cr I am just a honda man over yamaha not that there is anything wrong with either. The only real bike to have is kawasaki but thats just my opinion. It mainly depends on your abilities as a rider. Good luck.

Any of the 250's will be a great bike for you. I would lean towards a 250 instead of a 125, mainly because they are easier and funner to ride. Both of my sons went from 80's to 250's and skipped right over the 125's and never had a second thought of doing so. One rides pro now and the other is just behind. All of the 250's have some different strengths and weaknesses but, all can be fixed to your liking. Do some research on each bike and then pick the one that suits your size , riding style and needs best. You really can't go wrong with any of them! Good Luck and have fun!

I just did the same thing. Quads to 2 wheels. Kind of hard transition. But you'll get the hang of it. I got a 03cr250. Super fast comparied to a Quad. Then 4 stoke to a 2 stroke. Alot different but I love the snap of a 2 stroke. They're both great bikes. Just pick your colour.

Let me be the one to make an official invitation to join the good side. BLUE!!! Seriously though it depends on what kind of a motor you want. The CR's are a good motor with alot of top end and quite a hit in there as I recall. Yes the CR's have had a an aluminum frame for quite awhile now but they are on their fourth revision of the original. It's a twin spar frame and if you've looked at them they are quite pretty, as I'm sure you can attest. However they are a little tougher to change jets, and air filters on from what I've heard. The CR's are a great handling great braking, and very well suspended unit. But the CR motors have been a little behind the easily ridable Yamaha's. The Yamaha YZs are a good package that although not always as good in the suspension areas as CRs of the past ten years or as light, they have always had an easily ridable (smooth) powerband that doesn't surprise but just gets the work done. They have redone the suspension for the 05's and are getting great reviews on all fronts. The brakes up front have been redone on the front and are up to par. and the rear is great as always. The new frames on the YZ's have been designed to work every bit as good and even better than the steel frames of past YZ's. And the motors of the 05 YZ's are a spectacular blend of power, no big hits, and long usable powerband. Overall I would choose a YZ because I've been a yamaha fan for my whole life. But I wouldn't consider the CR a bad bike. The thing to remember about both motors is that with different pipes, reeds and porting you can make them behave differently than stock. But as far as a stock bike goes, if your not looking to ride MX the smooth power of the YZ or the 05 RMs would be my pick for your type of riding.

I almost forgot, bigger seats, tanks and all kinds of bling can be had for cross country, or woods riding.

I am sure to get flamed for this, But if your goal is to ride extended trail rides and gravel pits only, then I don't think the YZ or the CR is really the bike for you. What is your actual budget??

Give RC a year on yellow and you will see what it does for their sales. BUT , before this turns into another flaming war let's all admit.....the worst bike out there is better than we are riders. |

Dude, if you rode all those quads, the transition to 2 wheels should be a piece of cake. Yeah, you'll probably eat it a few times but so does everybody. Those are both great bikes and so are some other one's not mentioned. People usually go to war defending their bikes. Myself, I would be happy with either one. As long as you're out there is all that matters. One thing that often gets overlooked when buying a bike is dealer support. Which dealer is going to have the parts or services available to you. If you had all those other Yamahas, I'm guessing the local Yamaha dealer has been good to you or you were happy with the brand. Honda also has a very strong dealer network, so just take that into consideration.

Satch, thanks for the award. BTW, I was deleting my old email and came across this McKinney name. I didn't recognize it and it was links to your 450 cam instructions that I used earlier this year. At the time, I didn't really know who you were but just wanted to say thanks for helping out a nobody. Despite what people say about you, you're OK in my book. BTW, do you really have Yamaha tatooed on your backside?
