Got my new (to me) 2000 yz 125 I'm getting running (new clutch). My manual calls for 10w30 motor oil in the tranny. I thought I read on this forum somewhere that you should not use oils that have "Energy Conserving" on the back in that certification circle as there are additives in the oil that is not compatible with a wet clutch. I went to wal-mart tonight and couldn't find a single 10w30 oil without that energy conserving stamp. I found some Rottella 15w40 without it but they didn't have it in 10w30. Any guidance on getting some oil? I don't want to get the super expensive yamalube stuff if I don't have to as I plan on changing the oil frequently. Thanks guys Malcolm

I like automatic transmission fluid in mine. It has worked good in my stuff since about 1970. I have a cr500 that I have owned since 1988 which has had almost nothing but ATF in it since then. Someone will be along before long (if tradition holds) and tell you that ATF causes transmissions to wear or "break". If you like the way your bike shifts on ATF (I prefer it), use it. Some like the F type better than Mercon or Dexronn, as it is just a little bit more agressive on the clutch grab. I have used 15-40 in lots of 4 strokes which have the transmission and engine running on the same oil. It works just fine for them. It always seems a little on the "heavy" side for two strokes, as the oil doesnt thin as much, at least early on in the ride(s) since it isn't subjected to combustion heat, and cam action as the 4 stroke usage is. Your clutch may drag just a little bit more on startoff is all you will notice. Good oil at a good price, if you ask me.

Quote: Based on that and what else I've read on this forum I'm going to get the Rotella 15w40. The cool thing is my kids quad takes 15w40 too so I can use it there as well. I have been putting castrol 10w40 into my KLX 250 (2006) but after reading that link I think I'll switch it to Rotella 15w40 too. Thanks guys Malcolm
