| I think the 450 maintained will out last the smoker. I went through 2 top ends on my 500 in 2 years. My 06 450 is still very strong 3 years later. I love the 450's hands down. Cost to rebuild is way more than a smoker. I guess it's all in what you like. Honestly, I won't go back to a smoke unless I dig up the extra coin to have one just to play with. |

| About the best all around answer I can give you on that is, that a 4 stroke for the most part will run longer with less maintenance then a 2 stroke.....BUT and thats a BIG but.....you can rebuild a 2 stroke 4 times for the cost of one rebuild on a 4 stroke....and when they go....they go BIG. There are SO many people around my area going back to 2 strokes.....I would almost say the ratio at the track is around 40% 2 strokes at this time around here. |

| I've noticed the same thing, there seems to be more 2 strokes lately. I think its the low costs thats getting them back. After riding 4 strokes for so long, I wouldnt even think about going back to a 2 smoke unless ther was some kind of issuea where thats all i could afford at the time.... |

my personal experience from racing both kinds, either is only as reliable as the time and money invested in their care and well being. The cost of care for a four stroke exceeds that of a two stroke. I am another of those riders that switched back to two strokes after I saw my race budget increase 50%/year and my fun factor decrease by the same amount. I hope the trend continues as people come to their senses. My next bike will be a 2010 Service Honda CR250, a bike that can eat up any 250F and hang with the 450Fs. One thing to consider (and probably one of the reasons for the four stroke success), is it takes less skill to go fast on a four stroke vs. a two stroke, and the comparitively benign power delivery allows a rider of average conditioning to hang tough in a moto longer. Also if you are a racer, there's nothing like having displacement rules that favor one kind over another. How's that old saying go? "there's no replacement for displacement." Just another opinion. dogger |

| Maintenance is everything Either one will last as long as you want in accordance to your maintenance habits. Also note an XR400 / DRZ 400 will outlast a RMZ450 or CRF450. Both bikes are built to different specs, the one obvious is the RMZ and CRF are Racers. The DRZ and XR are built for Grandpa jones trail riding. Same as a Smoker, No difference. I have a very nice 06 for sale [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Quote:
