Default 2 cycle oils

My friend has been running every type of oil he can get his hands on in his yz. Everything from lawn boy to some marine products. I'm trying to explain to him that he shouldnt be running those, that theres a reason they made oils directly, but since my lack of knowledge on oils I can't give him good reasons. He still runs them and his bike still runs great. Can anyone tell me the differences, like why not to run it cause im sick of paying 7 bucks a bottle when he pays like a buck fifty.

I know what you mean! Sometimes it's so hard to get your friends to believe you when you are trying to help them!

ASk him whether he would rather spend a little bit more on oil than spend hundreds and maybe thousands on engine failure due to wrong engine oil type.

Tell him that his bike is made for performance not for slow revving boat motors. Eventually the oil will not protect from the stress and revs.

Let him see for himself if he doesn't believe you!

Actually theres quite alot of people that run Marine oils mixed with there gas and never have any problems...I won't use it but I have talked to quite a few people that use marine oil and say they get just as long on a topend with it as other dirt bike specific oils they have ran in the past and that everything looked good when they tore it down.

If he wants to go really cheap...have him go to wal-mart and get some of that good Super-Tech premix for like 30 cents a pint:

Don't run oil-cooled 2 stroke oils in a water cooled two stroke. There are totally different lubrication properties and you can trash your moto. And don't do vice-versa either.

You see many oils that say you can run them in anything, air or water. take some of them that I have tried and they didnt work well in anything.

I know people that switch around a lot. Most dont ever see any harm from it. Oils have gotten pretty good over the years. If you have to buy something at a gas station because you forgot yours, the sky really wont fall.

Since PWC's got popular, I think marine oils have improved a bunch. If you look at how an outboard is built, with the crank vertical: the ones i have taken apart have the bearings exposed to oil from the topside, it is held there until overflowing it looks like. They can live on those lean oil to fuel ratios that way. Dont use their mixing scales in other words, on your motorcycle or snowmachine.

I am sure some air and liquid cooled oils have a different formula to them, but the ones like Yamalube, CCI, etc dont differentiate. I doubt there was much difference in most of them.

I agree. Two stroke oil is pretty much two stroke oil. Use whatever makes that bike, or boat, or whatever scoot.

I hate my local Honda shop so much, I don't want to return for any business at all. I've looked for Mobil MX2T, but no one has it locally so far. I heard there was Amsoil about 20 miles from my house at a Ducati dealer, but I'm not sure if they have two stroke mix.

Anyway, I finally broke down and bought some Pennzoil all purpose two stroke oil for $1.77 a pint (compared to Honda HP2 at $6.60). I mixed it 32:1 with 93 octane pump fuel and the bike actually felt stronger today. Of course that small performance gain could have been from me switching from 89 to 93 pump fuel, or even the coolant change. But it just seems to work too good to judge it by it's cheaper price tag.

Any of you use the stuff for a long time and have any good/bad things to say about it? If not, I'm going to be the lab rat for you guys.

I'd say make sure you always run the highest octane pump gas you can buy for that 500.

And I don't know a thing about the Pennzoil, but if it's working good go for it. Also, try mixing 40:1 on that bike. 32:1 is too rich for a big bore.

I've run 32:1 in it since I got it. I didn't know that was too rich. : I just went by the recommended 32:1 on the Honda HP2 bottle. :

I do ride it hard since I have so many long straits to hit up to the top of 5th gear on. You sure I can still run less oil?

Question for 2k,does your 500 run fine at 32:1?? If so..don't go switching. 32:1 is fine for a 500...Stick with what you have been running. Alot of people say 32:1 is to much oil for a 250....whatever:
