Question Bike Ramps

Just curious as to what kind of ramp everyone is useing. I bought a cheap (40 bucks) aluminum one which replaced my trusty 2 x 6 but the first time I used the new ramp, the back tire was catching on the rear knobbies and I almost dumped it over the side. What a bummer! Now it is sitting in the corner with my aluminum Ocelot easy lift (easy bend) bike stand. I think I am going to buy a trailer anyway because I am getting tired of pushing it up and down out of my 4 wheel drive truck. Or maybe one of those Bike Totes like my buddy has. It just slides into the hitch receptical and you're off. What do you guys think? And no, it's not a fancy enclosed trailer. Too much $$$ for one of those right now.

Bike Trailer

I got a kit two bike trailer from Magneta on the internet. It came with everything including wiring, lights, ramp, 12" tires and good instructions. John and I assembled it our selves. The wiring and lights are pre-loomed and just bolt on with the plug installed. it tows well at speeds on the interstate highways and has held up very well so far. I grew up using trailers and like to have my pick- up bed for gear, coolers, tools and spares.

I went down to the local metals shop and bought a surplus 8' long X 7" wide piece of alum. channel. It's too heavy, but I wanted it for loading a street bike and it had to be stronger than the run of the mill loading ramps. Spent $25.00 on it because it was being surplused (sp) out.
Nobody will steal it because they can't lift it and it won't bend. LOL

I currently use a aluminum ramp I bought at SAM'S It is nice because it folds in half and has no sides to catch knobs on. To make loading the bike easier (I have a 4X4 also) I place something I can step on at the back of my truck, it was my tool box (but the lid started denting) and is now my easylift. I start the bike put it in gear and walk the bike up. It has made it really easy.

I have a Moto Sled, which one of those plug into the reciever haulers. There is two problems with it. It is really heavy and it takes forever to load/unload the bike.

That reminds me of the time I was tired after a day of riding and thought I would just put the XR in gear and run it up into the truck. I always put my bike stand to jump up on but this time I slipped just as I lifted off the ground and the bike fell over in the bed with me on top. Wouldn't have been so bad but the bike was hung full throttle and the rear tire got my leg pretty good.

Bill, How comfortable do you feel hauling two bikes a long distance with that trailer? I checked it out on the website and it looks like what I need. Thanks!

I'm looking for a "bike tote" to slip in the rear 2 1/2" receiver. I have 8' ramps, but my truck is a F250 SuperDuty 4x4 with 33" Goodyears and the angle up is to radical to be comfortable. The ideal bike tote would be almost completely aluminum, under $250, and slide into a 2 1/2" receiver. The 2 1/2" recevier is to pull my 22' enclosed trailer; 12' living area & 10' garage area, room for three bikes but a 1200 tongue weight.

Keith,
I just discarded my reinforced floor joyce for a aluminum ramp as well. I am going to test tonight to see if I have the problem you brought up with the sides...I hope not as I am way excited to have a new toy. Good to know however so I can watch out.

Bates68,

Good luck and I hope it works. I was so dissapointed with mine. I may take it to a local fab shop and see if the can break the bends out a little.

Macho,

Love the trailer w/box! I have a friend that has an aluminum welder on his service truck so I may be in business.

I went to work for a little while today and on the way back, I passed by a guys house that makes custom trailers and saw 3 brand new trailers that look almost identical to the one Machoman has. I think I may stop in tomorrow and see how much he is asking for them. Has anyone seen or used the ATK tire clamps? I will probably just weld on some channel iron and use tie downs for now but was interested in the strapless design.

I have had real good luck with my Big Tex trailer. It is a 8' x 12' with the drop down back and I got it for $799.

Good news to report. I tested out my new loading ramp on New Years day and it worked with no problems. The ramp is wide enough to accommodate my tires. All went well. I am using the tusk aluminum loading ramp from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Hey Keeto we need to go to Whitlocks auction in bells in a couple of weeks and see if we can find you a trailer.Or hone up on your scavenger skills and find some material and we will build a trailer.I had fourty dollars in the last bike trailer I built and you know how good it worked. You just need to hang around me and Les more often to learn the art of scavenger hunting.

You got that right! Between you (McGuyver) and Les (Junk Yard Wars King) I could build one for next to nothing. I will get with you about the material I can get from work for free... they let us scavenge the scrap metal dumpsters every Thursday. I'd like to have one like the first one you built, but a little lighter. I'll go with you to Whitlocks but you have to promise me that no vehicals will burn this time!
