This will be a fairly lengthy write up, but I’d like to provide as much information as possible. You are looking at the ultimate sand toy. This quad takes the best ATV sand chassis on the market, and the most powerful motorcycle engine in the world to make the ultimate race /all day rider. Words cannot describe how fast this bike is when driven aggressively, yet it’s every day riding manners are so controllable that you won’t even bat an eye at a full days or weekends worth of riding.
I am the second owner of this quad, I bought it from the builder, so much of the information I list came directly from the builder. The chassis started life out as a 2000 bombardier DS650. The stock DS has the ultimate suspension with giant travel and ground clearance, and was very capable of handling the kind of horse power installed. The motor is a Suzuki Hayabusa 1300cc water cooled, fuel injected plant that makes 185hp stock – and only weights 30 lbs. more than the stock DS650 Rotax motor! The motor had 4700 miles on it before installation into the quad, and the motor came from a working bought used motorcycle. The Hayabusa is the worlds fastest production motorcycle and is capable of 180+mph right off the showroom floor. All smog and emission parts have been left off the quad, and the de-restriction plug added to the computer system to allow the motor to make more power – approx. 200hp, the same as earlier stock Hayabusa ratings. New race filters, 4 large individual free flowing air filters with sand outer wares were installed right over the factory velocity stacks and throttle bodies. A hand build high output exhaust system with Bubs tips was installed to increase exhaust flow. The swing arm is a custom build arm from HP Research, +10 in size, and the rear shock was re-mounted to make the ride just perfect with the longer length. Also added were custom built ZPS shocks from Elka, with piggy back reservoirs, compression adjustment, and are currently set up for a rider weight of 230lbs. – but can be adjusted higher or lower as needed. Since the area where the gas tank is suppose to go is now occupied by the throttle bodies, stacks, and huge filters, an all aluminum 4 gal gas tank was fabricated and mounted under the seat. The gas cap is near the rear grab bar just behind the seat for easy access. The bike has new Skat Trak Mohawks tires on new Douglas Black Label rims on the front, and brand new custom special order Skat Trak 12 paddle Rippers on Black label Douglas rims on the rear. The Rippers have the same height paddles as Skat Trak taller haulers do, but the paddles are thicker and have Kevlar reinforcements inserted in them so the don’t bend over or rip off in high horse power applications. The chain has been changed from the stock 520 chain to a Sidewinder 530 X-ring Ti-Series chain, good to 14,000 pounds. All sprockets are new, and the rear is a light weight aluminum sprocket specialties unit. All bearings and seals everywhere on the bike were just replaced during the engine swap, although most of them didn’t need it. All the brake pad are brand new and will stop you on a dime. I’ve also installed a Trail Tech Chromed 1 1/8” clamp with a set of Tag T2’s in silver – all new. Most of the handlebar controls are from the Hayabusa, and all electrical switches work just like they did on the cycle – including the horn which is pretty loud and nice to have when you want someone to move out of your way. The choke lever is mounted on the left side handle bar as well, but because of the fuel injection you will not need it. The Hayabusa hydraulic clutch is used as well, and is very smooth and easy to pull. The Hayabusa instrument panel is also used, which has a working temp gauge, tach, oil light, high beam, clock, neutral light, and speedo (works but is not accurate). The original DS radiator is used, but has been relocated further forward for better cooling and space concerns. The 5” electric cooling fan has been changed to a thermo controlled 12.5” high output fan that works flawlessly. The temp gauge never goes past half way, even when you are running hard. Fuel injection is on eof the best things about this bike, it fully self-compensates for altitude and temperature which means never having to re-jet again, no matter day or night, your jetting is always 100% spot on. With the fuel injection, it can never overflow, it’s never cold-blooded, and never loses power on a hot day because the system always adjusts itself for any change in condition. It purrs at idle, and when you twist the throttle be prepared to hold on tight. It never hesitates or has any flat spots. The power is there when you want it no matter what rpm your running, and the power delivery seems endless. You can also park the bike at the top of a hill pointed downward at a very steep angle and when most bikes are hard to start, this bike will fire up the first instance you touch the button because there are no carb floats. At low rpm you can still fly up large hills in high gear! It has arm stretching torque, the motor doesn’t even have to work hard to fly up the biggest of hills that would make other bikes drop 2 gears or turn around. It also really screams on the top end and makes incredible high rpm HP – on the gas, the bike will hit the 11,000 rpm red line in every gear! The bike is not obviously geared for 200 mph like the street bike, but I would imagine that it would do at least 120 -130 mph if you have the guts to do it. The bike has a twist throttle set up, and driven normally is more than capable of putting around camp, and then from a dead stop it’ll launch like a rocket out of the hole in second gear – wheeling non-stop. You can fly over the whoops at full speed without getting off the gas, and the new suspension just soaks everything up. This bike also gets very good gas mileage, the 4 gal. tank will last you practically all day, depending on how long you’re at the hill for. Since being built, the bike has approx. 20 hrs of use on it, and has not even needed it’s chain adjusted yet. You absolutely could not ask for a most reliable or versatile quad than this, and had been my every day driver on more than a couple of trips when I’ve had problems with my main quad. It will blow away just about anything with 4 wheels, and run cool and comfortable (remember – it’s a DS!) all day. The seat is perfect, with a brand new seat cover from Jettrim. The plastics are brand new with zero hrs on them – they are one of the first sets of new Aftermarket Plastics made by Laker Custom, and they look sweet! The motor does not drip or burn anything and is spotlessly clean. It does use a small spin on oil filter, and a large oil cooler mounted in the front of the motor. Since the gas tank was removed from above the motor and remounted under the back of the bike to make way for the air filters and throttle body, a hole was left in the gas tank cover still in place where the tank fill spout use to be – so a handy cup/can holder was installed to fill the hole - this comes in extremely handy and always gets a laugh from the groups of people who check the bike out.
The bike needs nothing to be ridden right now – it’s 100% ready to hit the sand. Everything mechanical is brand new, including the 450 CCA high output Oddessy battery with a 5 yr warranty. The bike is very clean, but was not meant to be a show bike, it looks very good, but everything on the bike is not polished or powder coated. It is the ultimate combination of al day rider / racer and has never failed to draw a crowd where ever it goes. With this quad you will be ready for anything, an 8 hr day ride, or an 8 bike hill race – forget about switching between your riding bike and your racing bike, or getting spanked when your racing bike is back at camp because you’re out of race gas. The engine is not an extremely modified version, it runs on 91 pump gas all day long and tends to run better on that instead of race gas. The motor also does not require any more maintenance that what you would do for any quad, change the oil, check the plug once in a while (4 stroke), check the tires, and clean the filters.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING WHICH IS BOTH QUICK AND FAST, HAS MASSIVE HORSE POWER & ARM STRETCHING TORQUE, HAS “ALL DAY” RIDEABILITY WITH TOTAL RELIABILITY AND COMFORT, THEN THIS IS YOUR ONLY CHOICE. NO PRODUCTION MACHINE WILL EVER DO WHAT THIS BIKE DOES SO WELL – even if you spend another $10k on your bike modifying it. I have a clear CA title in hand, and a CA green sticker good until June of 2006.
I will ship the bike at buyers expense anywhere in the continental US using Forward Air or any other local shipper that the buyer chooses, I prefer Forward Air as I have dealt with them before and they supply you with a heavy duty shipping container. I will not build a crate for the bike. The bike will come with (4) motor cycle tie down straps which will be used to strap the bike down during shipping. The bike will be shipped form Anaheim, CA, please don’t email me asking for a shipping total, Forward Air’s number is 1-800-726-6554.
Please be assured that I have done everything I can to give an accurate description of the bike and that there won’t be any surprises. It is a very nice bike, runs like a watch, and you will not be disappointed in it’s condition or service you receive. The bike was brutal up Olds @ Glamis. It sold at a good price, I'm happy to say, but that was still about $6k short of what I had into it. In the end, I know you never make your money back, I got a decent price for it, and it went to someone who really appreciated it - I'm happy.
