Default LEATT or EVS-Evolution ?

Hi we are seriously thinking about getting our 12 yr. old son the Leatt Club brace(small) before racing again this year. I know that you can't put a price tag on safety, but we came across the EVS Evolution brace that I don't think is out yet, but is similar in style and quite a bit cheaper. I wonder about the safety of this brace and if it is going to hold up and be as good as the Leatt. Has anyone seen these, or read any reviews about the new EVS braces? Any tips or suggestions would be helpful. Here is a link to the EVS brace, the shoulder part worries me, looks like it might interfere with the helmet/roost protector?

check out the Leatt website and they give you charts on how good there neck brace really is. THey also compare there brace to those stupid little foam neck wraps that don't do anything.

I will be buying the Leatt neck brace soon, but still looking a top of the line Roast.

Good luck!

You might want to check out the Leatt Adventure, less adjustability but only ~$225, so it's quite a bit cheaper than the Club. Someone here got the EVS and reported good things, but I always thought it looked kind of funny how it sits on the shoulders. /Mike

My 15 yr old son and I have both had the EVS braces for quite some time now and I'm very pleased with them. There are a few things that drove me to the EVS over the Leatt.

1- I like the extra coverage over the shoulder of the EVS to better disperse the impact. I've had a broken collar bone and was concerned (and heard some stories) about the Leatt breaking collar bones on hard impact.

2- I was concerned about the ability to tuck-and-roll with the Leatt. The EVS appears to allow for more forward movement while still giving you the protection.

As far as fit, it worked with both my Fox chest protector and my sons ARC protectors without modification. The only time the brace really inhibits my riding is when I'm trying to look directly behind me to make sure I didn't loose anyone.

If the EVS wasn't out I would buy probably still buy the Leatt. I think it's worth the investment in a neck brace if it limits your chance of neck injury.

not trying to steal your thread but can you use the EVS or Leatt neck brace with a chest protector like the sixsixone pressure suit?

The two neck braces (EVS and Leatt) are both very different. The RC Evo doesn't open from the side; instead , you slide it around your neck via the front Velcro opening. As it is, the EVS covers more shoulder area than the Leatt and even the Alpinestars brace does. It has been said that it does limit side-to-side head movement more than the others.

The Leatt tries to redirect the load path of impact when you crash. The EVS was developed around the principle of slowing down and absorbing the energy of a crash. EVS believes that having a non-rigid platform is the proper way to absorb energy ( all the while reducing pressure on the collarbones). The Leatt and the EVS, while protecting your neck, work on completely different protection principles. One redirects energy (Leatt) and one absorbs energy (EVS).

So in summation, I would say it is not fair to say the Leatt is way better. Neither of them suck. But I know alot of riders who injure collarbones wearing Leatt braces. Just fact in my book. Hope this helps you, I own a EVS and I found a brand new one on EBAY for $115. Good deal huh?

Well said.

Both are better than nothing that's for sure. One just costs a lot less than the other.

And neither one costs near as much as a broken neck.

Even better said guys
I never rode with a neck brace until now, I know that I fall sometimes and I just want to lessen the impacts. I wear the minimum (boots and gloves, pants/jersey helmet)and a kidney belt, knee pads, neck brace and chest pro. I have seen so many accidents that could have been avoided or lessened in many degrees. Just be careful and have lots of fun!
