Angry Warrior Problem

My 98 Warrior header turns red hot after only running a couple of minutes. I checked the valves and they were within spec, it idles and throttles up just fine. Could it be running too rich. Thanks

It would be running lean not rich if the header is glowing, however is it when you are just idleing it for a while? If so, that is not uncommon. They shouldn't be idled for long periods of time. If it's going to sit for more than a couple minutes, I would shut it off.

Also welcome to the boards. Hope to see you around here often.

Like Woody said, glowing pipes are from a LEAN condition, not a rich one.

Also, it is common for a 4-stroke header to glow after extended periods of idling.

I also agree, probably shouldn't let it idle for too long if you don't have to.

Welcome aboard!

Has anyone checked their header pipe after fattening up the idle jet? I know when I went to a 42 pilot on my 400ex it obviously richened it up...but it also seemed to make it run cooler when idling....

That could make sense maybe??

More fuel, more cooling from the fuel, although, I though the pilot jet didn't come into play till 1/8 throttle or so???:

1/8 throttle is when the needle starts to control the air/fuel ratio. The pilot jet is for idle.

And yes increasing the jet size will make a motor run cooler because more raw fuel will hit the cylinder wall.

Right.

I got that backwards I guess!

Pilot jet controls UP TO 1/8 throttle

Firstly I don't fully understand why people feel the need to idle any air cooled machine for longer than a few seconds....turn it off and let it cool!!!!

However, if you do feel the need....then I would say a fatter pilot jet should richen up your idle so your engine runs cooler...I can't imagine it affecting the normal drivability so you might as well do it to correct that lean condition you have going there.

I have heard of people richening up the jets and it did cause it run cooler, so that would make sense.
