gripe My 8 year olds scarry ride. Your thoughts on this.

I'll try to keep this short. My son's Blaster had the throttle stick approaching a hill. Fortunately he had the sense to pull in the clutch and hit the kill switch. When i pulled up behind him the engine was still winding about 8000rpm. My first word's to him were SHUT IT DOWN and i saw in his eyes somthing was wrong. I went to the kill switch, it was off. The thing still screaming I did the kill switch again. No such luck so I shut the fuel off and pulled the plug wire because im smarter than this machine. The thing screamed itself out of fuel with the plug wire off. I stood there astonished at what just happened. So can someone help me out with this one please. This is an 02 Blaster with the TORS in place. I thought the TORS would shut the thing down in the event of cable failure. To throw more crap on the fire, After his machine cooled the thing seemed fine. Startd right up and throttle seems to respond fine. Needless to say his day was done and he will not ride it untill i find something wrong. Thank You . Roostertail6

I'd pull the cable and replace it. Forget about lubing it, just replace it. Pull the carb too. Make sure nothing it hanging up on the slide. You could have put it in gear, put the rear brake on and then let the clutch out.

If you still have a thumb throttle on there make sure it is free of debris and do like freak said replace the cable and pull the carb for inspection.

Hit the nail on the head. Might be you have too hot a spark plug in the motor, the insulator might be hot enough to keep the mixture going just like the old glow plugs on the model airplanes.
Was your son low on fuel at the time? If so, he may have had the combination of too lean a mixture with the glow plug effect. I know that on my two stroke, if I have the clutch in or its in nuetral when it runs out of gas, it will rev to an insane speed. Like freak said, just put her in a high gear, stomp on the back brake and let out the clutch.

Thanks for the useful insight peeps. Upon disection this was the find.
Fuel was low.
Cable has a little grab to it.
TORS and Carb switches checked out fine.
So I have a cable on order and will clean and blow out carb. This was the first time i ran Castor 927 vs the spectro normally run. The situation made me question the benol at first.

I'm just glad to hear no-one got hurt!!

I also agree with the putting it in gear and holding both front and rear brakes!
I had to shut down a CR125 like that one time!! Scared the CRAP out of me!!

Thought I was going ove the drop-off into the stumps and rocks! Throttle cable was frayed, and it stuck wide open in the powerband!!

The only problem with trying to hold the rear brake and kill it on a blaster is that the rear brake probably won't hold the power of the motor, the rear brakes on those things leave ALOT to be desired!!!

I sure am glad no one got hurt and you found the problem though.

My thoughts exactly. I can't trust the rear brake at all. Adjustments made constantly.

Oh I agree its a tough spot, but until you have had a rear brake on a blaster apart about 5 million times, you can't appreciate what I am saying bro. It may work if the brake has a fresh rebuild on it.

I used to be a blaster rider, my last one was a 97, the best thing i ever did was switch the cable brakes to wet brakes, lots of kits iut there, plus with a little modifications, you can make almost any system work, that is strange that it ran with the plug wire off, did it get you when you pulled the wire? glad no one got hurt, i guess if the plug wire was off and the machine kept running that is why the TORS did not work, well it was, all it does is cut the spark, and, now that i think about it, you probley did not get hit with the spark. interesting. sounds like an intro to a youtube vid.

Just for further notice, a lot of guys I race with put in fresh throttle and clutch cables every year. I'm also into that now...

Go run by your local shop and pick up a cable luber, I was stupid and didn't do that until I had a throttle cable stick wide open on me several times in a race. It's worth the $20 you'll spend on it, just make shure it is one with a two screw body. I think your supposed to lube new ones, not 100% but I've always got the luber in my garage now so I do it.

When I've had them stick on my in the past I've just reached down and yanked on the throttle body

I have had this happen on a triple cylinder jet ski, I pulled all three plug boots, and shut the fuel off, as well as the ignition, and it still ran!

I'll tell you what my problem was, as my guess that this is your issue. I had a bad base gasket below my carbs (I know you don't have a a base gasket, but the theory is the same) so instead of drawing air through the carb, air was being pulled into the engine around it! This allows the engine to run itself; remember, the slide in the carb really controls air flow into the engine (air pulls the fuel in), so if the engine can get it's own air without the carb, you lose the ablity to control rpm, and because the engine is running very lean (and hot), it can continue to run. This would explain why your pulling the plug boot didn't help.

Before this happened, did you ever knotice that the idle rpm was higher then usual? Maybe you have a small air leak that is growing? You can also check this theory (if it will idle) by spraying a small amout of carb cleaner around the carb boot, the cylinder base gasket, and head. If the rpms climb, you'll know the engine has just sucked in some of your carb cleaner.

Just one more idea for you to test. Replacing the gasket in my jetski fixed the problem.

Note: This is my opinion, and I am not an expert; use my opinions at your own risk. Good luck!

I'd have to agree with you there Motoman....
The rear brakes (on the older Blasters) sucked BIG time!

wow... No way.. The same thing happened to my blaster when my brother was riding up our hilly driveway. He pulled the plug, pulled the fuel and hit the kill switch, after a few seconds it died. After that we never had the same problem. We looked it up everywhere and no one had anything to say. But like I said, it never happened again. I'm not sure if it will happen to you again or not, just make sure the cable is free and lube it up.

I almost had the same thing happen on my 03 Blaster. I had mild motor work and a Toomey pipe on it. After a race and pulling it on teh trailer it done it. I had found the kickback on teh carb was "sprung" and didn't let it pull back the cable. I would be sure everything that moves, moves like it is supposed to. Not to sure if ya got it fixed or not, But it's just some stuff I'd check as well.
