Default Clueless on a 05 yfz450

2 weeks ago out riding with the brother-in-law he is on the quad 05 yfz450 and i am on my bike, is quad is cursed with all the stange things that happen to it, the latest was due to one of his buddies going clipper crazy attemping to install a tether and hacking wires until the correct end result was achieved. the harness was repaired by another one of his buddies who had 1/2 a diagram and is a damn good mechanic. so we are out riding he gets hung up and the quad starts to over heat, i asked about if his fam is working he responds no. with that a third member in our crew comes up with jumping the fan to the key to have it on all the time to finish the day. He gathers tools and clips the i believe it is the blue wire from the fan and runs it to battery + and fan works. then he strips not cuts the one i believe red wire on the key and from what i can recall the fan is on due to key in power, then does the 2nd red wire, same result, moves to i think the one brown wire and tests the fan, it turns on and off with the key. attemps to start it, nothing but the fan running. the ony wire that was cut was the one fan wire, the others stripped and taped so they dont touch. he then removes the blue wire from the key and tries it, nothing again, then connects the wire back up and still nothing. At this point we attempet to use the starter relay (under the seat with fuese, both are ok) and jumped using screwdrivers, starter works but no fire, we got him out of the trail and took it to his place, no spark, all handle bar swithes work, at a loss here, to what happened, did the cdi box fry? and clues, suggs, help? thanks

well after a long several weeks we determined the cause to be a bad harness, seems the problems were not related and just seemed to happen at the same time, after the new harness was installed and the tether switch installed correctly this time around lit right off and no problems since, well with his, my bike must of caught the bug off of his quad, because his is riding and i am just stuck in the shop, if you get a chance head over to the 4 stroke yamaha area and check out "bike down, i repeat bike down" and let me know what you think, thank you to all that helped and gave insight on this problem.
