Default 2001 Raptor Trans Question

Hey guys, I knew before I purchased the 4 wheeler that there was a chance the trans could break the second gear. Mine hasn't had 1 problem, it can always shift but like all raptors they are kinda hard to get into neutral at times.

The real question ,

I have always used the clutch when riding it and so has the owner before me. I've read a lot about the subject and it seems that most of the problems come from not using the clutch. Would it be safe to say that I most likely won't have any problems with it?

If I do have a problem with it I guess the cost of repair around 1,000 dollars but it would be best to take it to a local Yamaha dealership and have the service department repair it with 03 gears?

Thanks,
Ronnie

I had an '01 Raptor for 2 years (just sold it) and "rode it like I stole it". I shifted without the clutch a lot and never had any problems with the trans. I did have a 12 tooth front sprocket, which I have read can help prevent the trans from going out. For the last year I would miss shifts from 1st to 2nd every so often. I've read that once that starts happening the trans may be on its way out, but mine never gave out and was still going strong when I sold it. If your worried go down a tooth on the front sprocket.

I would suggest taking a tooth off also. I think eventually you're going to have tranny problems though. I owned three of them and two of them within 8 months lost the tranny's, so I hurried and sold the 3rd one when it was about 6 months old.

That is funny, I called South Valley and Plaza and they haven't heard anything about this. They say most times any tranny problems come up its from not using the clutch. I agree with them in a way, great part is if it does screw up i'll take it to Plaza they said it would take about 6 hours to fix it

Plaza probable doesn't want to spread the word because they have a '01 Raptor for sale for something like $5300 (insane price). Not to doubt them, but to fix the trans problem in the '01 Raptor seems like it would take way more then 6 hours. Checkout this site for more info on what it requires [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Just ride it till it dies or do what I did .. sell it and get a YFZ . $1000 towards a YFZ is much better then spending $1000 to fix a Raptor IMO.

I had both of mine done by South Valley and I believe they charged me about 6 hours labor, but I think it was closer to 8 hours. To this day I think it is funny that Yamaha won't admit there was a problem, yet in 2002 they regeared and haven't had any issues with them. I guess when I bought my '02 Raptors and '03 Raptors and '04 Raptors and all of the other machines I've owned in the last couple years and had absolutely no tranny problems with any of them tells me that I must have only shifted my '01 Raptors without the clutch or something. Sorry, but I'm not buying it!!
