Question Suzuki TS185 - problem ??

Gday all this is my first post, I have bought a suzuki ts185 off ebay for 400 aussie dollars, in this persons ad he claims the bike is/was hard to start but when i phoned him earlier he stated that it has a weak spark and he could not get it to run. He claims the points are shot (told by his mechanic mate) and says thats all the problem is.

I know diagnosing a problem like this is hard over the net but could anyone tell me if this could be the cause and what else could be stuffing up on it to make the motor flood and not start/hard to start?

Thanks in advance, Nodg,

Hi,
On an old bike like that it is most likley the points if it has a weak spark. Which is an easy fix if you know the factory settings.

I know little about bikes, ive been told the 1981-1983 has a pointless ingitio system? He said it is wetting the sparkplug and has weak spark that all i know....its also been sitting for 6 months i a shed collecting dust could this have caused a problem such as a clogged carby?

Suzuki TS 185 1983 - eBay Other Trail Bikes, Trail Bikes, Motorcycles, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 08-Dec-08 11:56:40 AEDST) thts the bike im picking up maybe it will help more.

First thing to do is replace the spark plug. Second is put fresh gas in it if it dosnt have it already. If that doesnt work, clean the carburetor very good. Also the air filter might be bad if it has been sitting for a while.

Everything that Beatty said except clean the carb now and get it over with. If the bike has been sitting for any length of time, its most likely in need. Definitely clean & oil or replace the filter. Take a piece of paper or a very fine piece of emery, and with the points closed, pull the paper/emery through a few times to clean out any dirt or corrosion that might be on the contacts. Its probably a long-shot, but you never know.

also check your mixture at the carb, could be a bad air/fuel mix, the reed petals could be shot, so if you pull off the carb to clean it, pull your reed cage and check the reeds, not too familiar with this type of bike, but thats what i would do.

TS185s ALL have pointless ignition. His "mechanic" might also be his third grade brother!
If he doesn't know about the electronic ignition, doubt he knows what a "weak spark" is.
Suggest you do all tune-up stuff.

If no start rebuild the carb and get a new spark plug wire. Worst case is that it could be a bad coil on magneto--just that this is rare.

Good luck!
