Default Suzuki JR50 2 speed!

My son has a JR50 and he is looking to move up. He is 6. He has been riding the JR50 for about 1.5 yrs. He wants a little more low end especially for mud and sand.

I found this article: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

JR50/KDX50 2 speed gear modification : Here is a good tip for those with the JR50/KDX50 bike. You can modify the gear selector and get a second lower gear ratio. My friend did it on his son's bike and allows it to drive up hills better. Here is the link: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I am anxious to try this mod, but am a little unsure which part is to be ground. Maybe it will be apparent when I get it apart...

I've posted this in the past but it's good to bring up as a lot of people don't know about it. Also, these bikes are waaaay detuned and have some potential. The part to be ground is #3 in your diagram, the hole needs to be enlarged to allow the shift lever to move UP (further) shifting into 1st gear.

Hey Faded,
Part number 3 has a shaft and a flat piece of metal with a retangular slot that part #2 goes through. Are they saying to enlarge the slot on the ends to lengthen the rectangle or enlarge the top and bottom thereby making it more like a square?

Also, did you grind the notch with part #3 still installed in the bike, or did you remove it first?

Put all the pieces in the exploded diagram together and try to push the shift lever UP, the shaft (part #2) will bind on the front/back of the rectangle. Enlarge the rectangle a little at a time until you can push the shift lever UP (which moves the shift fork, item #6) into first gear. From bottom to top the shift pattern is 2 - N - 1.

You can also take 0.020" to begin with off the head, without any problems, to add more bottom end.

Also, the carb is screwy, it has two pilot jets...if you start to uncork the bike yank out the first pilot jet. Eventually the main will have to be increased as well. I'm going on what I can remember, if you want I can dig up some more info for you. We played with one making it a JR52 but sold it before we were finished.

You can do it either way depending on what tools you have to work with. A dremel or something similiar will let you keep it on the bike, just keep track of the shavings.

Well. I did the mod but it did not work. The JR50 we have was made from 2 jr50s one with a good frame bad motor, one with a bad frame good motor. I think it is a mid 90's.

Anyway, piece #1 hits the case and it won't move enough to go into 1st gear (you can see it hit the case inside with a flashlight - meaning you would have to slpit the case and grind more stuff, in my case it seems). The slot is more than elongated enough now. Bummer.

I think I will just shop for a different bike for him, maybe an xr50 or something, those are 3 speeds, right?

Wow, that's definately no good. Yes, the XR/CRF50's are 3spd auto clutch and are great bikes.
