This is taking off from the other post ( crank seals). I have been searching-reading and am going to put new crank bearings along with seals in the bottom end. There is a wealth of great info. on here. I had read where several of you had used an automotive steering wheel puller on the crank end with longer bolts to separate the case halves. Does this work fairly well on the RM? Money for this project is somewhat limited and the motion pro case splitter was more $ than I thought it would be. I was also reading about using heat on the case halves to seperate them easier, then using heat again and freezing the bearings for setting the bearings. Any other tips like these anyone can think off? I was also wondering what the best way was to keep the tranny gears/parts all together while messing with the case halves. Thanks!!!

It has worked well on the RM's that I have done. I can't tell if you have a flywheel puller yet, but that is something you can't improvise on if you need an assurance that you can use the same flywheel over again. You can get them for under 20 dollars.

We used to have an old yamaha blaster and I got a flywheel puller for that. I will have to see if the threads are the same. If not, I will get one of those.

I should have read your last sentences a little closer. I like heating the areas around the bearing sockets. I like to leave everthing I can in the right side case until I am ready to lay everything out. I use rubber bands, (sometimes cut from inner tubes) around the gears, twisted and crossed to hold them in place. I don't photo things often, but if you have a digital camera it can help when reassembling. Just for good measure (as they say) I replace the shifting fork that handles the low to second shift pretty much everytime. Sometimes the others as well, depending on how they measure out. I haven't done an RM since 93, so I can only suggest a manual to you. Suzuki used to send pretty good ones.

I sure would not want to tackle this without a manual. The RM came with a clymer, which seems to lay things out fairly well. You said you like to leave things in the right side case, I thought that I would have to clean everything out right away so I could press or drive the old crank bearings out?
