New 1977 Suzuki TS185 Problems

I have jsut purchased a new 1977 TS185 that has been idle for 31 years. It had no gas (tank rust free) but the other fluids were changed out. I was able to get the bike started but I couldn't rev it past idle, there is alot of white exhaust smoke, and some dark exhaust oil spaters. I'm new to 2 strokes and not sure what all this means. My first plan is to clean the carb. I'm not sure if this will cure all the issues. I was told that the crank shaft seals maybe causing the smoke/oil spatters. Could this be correct? Also, if the oil seals do need replacing, do the cases need to be split or can the seals be replaced without having to do this?

I would clean the carb even if their was'nt any gas in the tank and change the crank seals. You don't have to split the cases but the fly wheel (left side) and clutch assy (right side) will have to be removed. You will probably need a puller for the flywheel and the nut that holds the clutch on the crank is lh threaded. You will need an impact to get the nut off. Good luck and congrats on finding the antique TS.

hi
i just got an 1981 suzuki ts185 er from my brother.
it was in his garage standing stil for more than 5 years.
i cleaned the carburettor and the bike runs great.
but i would like to change the oil in the gearbox but i have no idea of what oil should be in there and how many.
maybe someone can give me a hint?
i also would love to have a copy of a service manual for my bike.
maybe someone on the forum has this an can send me a copy (digital or pdf)

greetings and hoping to get a response.

I have a 78 DS125. The DS and TS were identical models exect the TS was street legal. I have a repair manual, and it covers the 125, 185, and 250. It calls for 20W50 motor oil in the gearbox. Hope this helps. Check on ebay for a repair manual. You can actually find quite a lot of parts there for the TS. The one question I have for you is about the carb. You said you cleaned it. Did you buy a carb rebuild kit? If so, where did you find it? I've been looking, but can't seem to find one.

Re: New 1977 Suzuki TS185 Problems

thanks for the information about the oil.
i just took the carburetor apart and cleaned everything from the smudge of the rubberised petrol and put it back together again.
it might be handy to notice how many turns some adjustmentscrews are in or out before you take it apart.
this saves a lot of experimenting afterwards.
the bike now runs perfectly but the fuel consumption is, in my opinion too high.
it runs 15 km on one liter fuel.
is this normal?

Im not sure on how many miles I get because I dont have a speedometer, but I could ride it all day on a trail on roughly a gallon. Mine has a two gallon tank and needs to be switched over to reserve when it hits a half gallon. I have never had to switch it to reserve.
