my 94 rm125 is coming along. she has gotten a lot of new nuts and bolts to replace the ones that were missing and a good cleaning. i put a 185 main jet and 55 pilot in the carb with new gaskets. she won't fire by kicking only rolling a few steps and shifting into gear. IS IT TIME FOR A TOP END. last one i was told was 12 hours ago. also she won't idle any idea where the idle screw should be, all the way in, middle, almost all the way out? plus it bogs low rpm then rips in powerband. what do i do this is my first 2 stroke

Hard to start usually means low compression but you never really know if the carb is jetted properly. If the low speed circuit (pilot jet) is too rich it can be a bear to start. A new ring and a new plug wouldn't hurt. The air screw is usually about 1.5-2 turns out. The idle screw (that adjusts the slide) does not have a difinitive setting - adjust as needed to achieve the desired idle speed. Something to keep in mind - too lean of a setting (smaller pilot jet) will usually get the bike started if the jetting is suspected to be excessively rich. Might not be good to run that way for long, but if you have to start from scratch and there are other things that could be wrong, a lean setting can help narrow down the problem. A piston ring on a 125 doesn't last long. Yamaha suggests a new ring every 2 hours of hard riding to keep things fresh. 12 hours is enough to wear the ring to the point that the compression loss is noticable through the kick starter. Lots of variables there. When I raced 125's frequently I would re-ring every week and replace the piston every 3-4 weeks - even running at 32:1. Also - everyone kicks a bike differently. You really have to kick it like you mean it. It could be that you are kicking it too slowly. Just a thought. Scott

fire your bike up and let it idle then turn the idle screw to where it some what idles over normal and then cut it off and then try to start your bike

MXtras basically summed it all up... as far as the bike boggin out in low rpms usually means ur running too rich so u might want to either lean out the air screw meaning turning it out or you might need a smaller pilot jet.. or lean out the needle.. a good way to check if your running too rich or too lean is by the plug.... if it's black that means your too rich(too much fuel) if its white your too lean (too much air not enuff fuel) when everything is tuned right the plug should be a light brown color..
