Default 2-Stroke Reeds question

My sons 2002 RM85 has reeds (obviously) and I took the carb off to clean it and peeked at the reeds to see how they were.

I could see a gap between the mating surface and the reeds, so I took them off and flipped them over. However, that didn't change anything. The gap still remains, which leads me to believe either I'm nuts (possible) or they are supposed to have a gap (about 1/16").

The reeds themselves appeared to be in good shape, no fraying or anything out of the ordinary, just the gap.

Is that normal?

Woodword,

No the reeds should lay flat on the mounting block, how does the bike run?

Do a Google search on 2stroke reeds & you should see haw they should look.

It runs okay.

Kind of has a hard time getting into the power band, and after I checked them the bike cuts out some, which is kind of weird.

So no gap is good, a gap is bad.

Woody, try to remember it this way. Gaps in spark plugs and ignition points are good. Gaps in reed petals and spandex are NOT. Got it now?

Just to report, we picked up some new reeds and adjusted the jetting while we were at it and the bike runs like a top now. Revs very smoothly (no sputtering).

The new carbon reeds left no gap at all. Where as the old ones (though they looked good) left a gap.
