gripe 01 RM125 shifting and lube

I just bought a 01 rm 125 (and its my first suzuki) and the bike runs great but im having trouble with the gears. When im hard on the trottle down a strait-away im shifting hard and fast and the bike does just fine, but when im just crusing down the road and try to shift up and give it some gas it just revs like its in nutral. Is there something wrong and if so how do i fix it. also put bel-ray gear lube in it but it was exspensive, i have heard you can put ATF or Rotela T in the gear box will this hurt it?
