I started my bike(2002 KX100) up for the first time in like 2 weeks. It took atleast 20 kicks and has never taken this long. The weather was really cold at like 40 degrees and real windy. Once I got it started I let it warm up for a couple minutes on choke, took it off and it would die off, turned choke back on (did this like 8 times). Then I tried to ride without choke really quick and try and get her moving but it bogged. Tried again and I got her into the beginning of second gear and it bogged and sputtered 3 times, pulled the clutch in and got the choke on real quick. In the end I finally got her to run without choke with very few small bogs throughout the day. From then on she rode with a little feeling of loss of power, but I was mud(creek) riding so I'm sure that played a factor. What could be the problem? Just the cold weather? It being not started in 2 weeks? New top end time? Air leak? Thanks, sorry for the long write up.

Well you should never really let in warm up on choke. You should use the choke to start it when it needs it, which is usually when the bike hasnt been ridden in a while. It should only be on for ten to fifteen seconds. It sounds like your bike is not getting enough fuel because the choke blocks the air from entering the fuel air mixture which you said you had to use to keep it going. So i think you can rule out a air leak, maybe your float? Others will offer more information.

I would check you carb vent tubes for blockage and then check for a plugged pilot jet!

I'm definately no expert but sounds like your carb is plugged with something try cleaning it out real good & go from there

I also think its either a plugged carb pilot. Make sure you check your air filter too. We had one with symptoms like this once and the filter was covered in mud.

Well, i just talked with my local mechanic and he said to take the carb out and drain it and make sure no grit is in there cloggin the stuff up. He also said to drain some of the gas out of the petcock into a bottle and check it out. He said water might have gotten in the airboot and was making me have to blow it out. So im gonna take the carb out, drain it and inspect it, drain the gas a bit and change the spark plug, and make sure the air filter isnt damp. One question, after i drain the carb and put it back in, do i turn the gas on and give it a little throttle to fill it back up before i start the bike? -Thanks

Re: Whats the cause? All you have to do is turn the petcock on, the float bowl will fill until the float needle closes off the fill circuit. Not a pumper type carb on your KX 100, anyway, without a 4-T type accelerator pump (Keihin FCR or Edelbrock Quicksilver) carburetor it wont squirt fuel into the cylinder. Bill
