Default KX100 spark for a couple of kicks, then fades away. No spark.

Hi, Dave here, working on a sweet little 1998 KX100. I rebuilt top and bottom end, all is good mechanically, but couldn't get it to start. It gave a couple chugs like it wanted to, but dead after that. I pulled the plug and cranked by hand, it would give a few nice fat sparks, then the spark got weaker and was gone by about the 5th kick. Leave the bike alone for a couple hours and try again, same couple of fat white sparks and then fade to nothing. Electrical has always been my weak area, coil breaking down maybe? CDI? any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

PawPaw is the electrical guru around here, but I would start by checking the wiring over closely for any wear spots or breaks. Then move onto the coil, and if those two items check out I'd test the stator. Also make sure you have a good ground.

Do an ohms test on the coil both primary and secondary sides. It sounds like the coil is breaking down. The color of the spark also incorrect. It should be bright Blue in color.
Look at coil mounts for poor connection due to rust or paint as well as the spark plug boot to wire connections.
The OHS testing should give you a clue as to what is going on. Post up the numbers from both the primary and secondary testing and may be I can guide you. Thess desired numbers should be in the shop manual for your bike.
