Default 76 kd 125 transmission problems

i have a 76 kd 125 that you can shift into first and second easy. but then it is hard to get it into third but if you shift up and down and work at it you can get it into all of the gears. does anybody know what might be wrong. i havent taken anything apart yet so i don't know what everything looks like.

Bent shift forks or worn and notched shift spool would be my guess. I have never been inside a bike of this vintage, though so these are simply guesses.

ok i have another question about this bike and transmission. the bike sat for probly 10 years and then sombody got it running and the transmission was run dry for a little bit i guess but could it not shift just because of there being no oil in there or did not having any oil in it wreck everything. i know its a stupid thing to happen but i just got thinking about an automatic car transmission somtimes if they get low they stop shifting right and i just wondered if the same thing could happen

thanks

Default transmission with no oil

The oil in a 2-stroke motorcycle engine is for lubrication only. The fluid is not used in a hydrolic fassion to change the gears in any way.

The only way to figure out what is going on is to split the case. It's not a big deal but you should get the proper tools (case splitter) to do the job correctly. Once inside you will most likely see the problem easily. It should be easy to fix also (most cases are). And while in there, might as well change the bearings and seals!

good luck and let us know the deal (take pictures and post).
