Just bought a used 1999 KX 125. Cleaned the carb out real good and changed the plug. The bike fired right up on the 2nd kick, ran for about 10 seconds and then bogged out. After dying the plug seemed drenched with fuel as well. It seems like it's running way too rich, but I don't know how to adjust the air/fuel mixture, or if an adjustment even exists on this carb. If anybody could help out on this one, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

When you have the bike running are you revving it or letting it idle?

It's only ran once, the first time I fired it up. I revved it a couple of times, but that was only because I could hear it starting to die on me. I don't know if it was smoking bad, because I don't really know anything about two stroke motorcycles. It was smoking, but it wasn't enough to drive me out of my garage or anything. A lot of smoke would mean a top-end rebuild is needed, right? I'm going to go ahead this weekend and re-clean the carb, install a new air filter, and new plug. If there's anything else anybody thinks should be done, please let me know.

I dont have much experience with really small 2 strokes like the 125's but from the little experience i have you just have to keep them revving alittle even right after starting or else they will die, or atleast that how it is on my brother cr125. Even when i start up my old 250 i dont let her idle to low, i keep giving her alittle throttle so the plug doesnt get to much oil on it.

Now the first thing that should be done is for you to get a manual for that particular bike. Don't know anything about two strokes, and you took the carb apart to clean it??? Are you sure everything is back in it's proper place and the float set correcty?? If so,, how are you sure. Faded has a good post on here about setting floats and more on jetting. If this one was stored with the fuel on and the float was in need of setting it may just be badly flooded. Some would say to take the tank off, remove the spark plug and turn it upside down and kick it over. I dont like that one. If you have an aircompressor, and suspect heavy flooding, take off the reed cage, take off the pipe. set the piston at bottom dead center, use a controlable air nozzle and a rag to blow through the intake and exhaust alternately until it is dried out. But please get the manual first.

That's right! I got it running on Saturday! It turns out that the carb DOES have an adjustment for fuel metered in on the stroke. The manual called for bottoming out the screw and the backing it out 1 1/2 turns. The screw was backed out 4 turns! That was the problem all along. That was the greatest feeling when that bike fired up and kept on running! Thanks for all the help and advise on this one. I know where to go when I've got another problem! Oh yeah, superrooster, I love the Hurri-cycle! "Stand back, there's a Hurricane coming through!" And as for you, ossagp, why don't you have any faith in a brother? Ya, I took the carb apart without knowing anything about it, and ya, it was put back together properly. I'm a diesel mechanic by trade, I'm very good at that sort of thing. Don't ever assume my friend... Take care...
