It sure sounds like you broke the ring. Did you just put a new ring in or was it sitting a while? It seems like all the power is going past the ring and out the pipe in a backfire. You did lube the cylinder/piston real good didn't you? If not it may have scored the cylinder. Its kind of hard to know what the prob is without more info like how much compression it's really got in PSI, it might feel like enough even with a broken ring. Other than that it could be a fouled plug.

The only way the flywheel key could get broken would be if the nut was loose, but it wouldn't run at all then. How do you know the ring isn't broken? Did you do a compression test? Maybe you put the piston in backwards? I don't know what else it could be if it was fine before you re-ringed it.

check the spark plug gap. that might be the problem.

I put new ring and piston in my bike and after 15 mins of riding it lost all compression and died. The ring caught the ehaust port and scored the bore and re-plating was needed!
Hope it's not llike that for you! Good luck!

Thats the same thing my friends did we couldnt get it started just a backfire here and there. It ended up being that the ring on one side of the piston was messed up and the compression dropped to about 20psi.

Maybe some dirt or sand got into the intake that you didn't know about and it ground the ring to nothing. That happened to my bike before I got it, he was hillclimbing and it flipped over backwards in a sand pit, the air cleaner had a hole in it and the bike didn't last another day. The rings were severly worn on the exhaust side. If I were you I'd tear it apart again to see whats wrong.

First thing I would check is compression, it sounds to me like the ring may have broken as others have stated.

If compression is good, then my guess is the piston in backwards if you removed that although you didnt' say you replaced the piston, just the rings.

My money's on the broken ring.

When putting the cylinder on did you twist it any, if you did it problay caught a port and broke it.
