I don't think so. The 00-01 had a Mikuni and I believe your 96 has a Keihin.

I tried to find out for sure but can't find anything on the 96 to verify it's a Keihin. It should say on the side. One way to find out is to pull the main jets out of each carb and see if they are the same. The Mikunis have mains in the 350-450 range while a Keihin main is generally in the 150-250 range. Just keep in mind that even if they are the same type of carb, the inlet and outlet sizes may be different, so it may not even fit your airboot or reed valve.

The 96 had a Keihin PJ on it. The 2000 has a Keihin PWK (much nicer) and the 2001 has a Mikuni on it. They all swap. Easily. You will only like the Mikuni off the 2001 better than the PJ in that it has an idle screw that raises the slide for idle control rather than the screw that raises or lowers the enrichening piston.

I've done the swap on my 96. Having the PWK is nice. All of the PJ carbs that are that old seem to have issues with the choke/idle sealing due to wear and it's hard to get the jetting consistent on the pilot.

Upgrading to a newer carb is always nice if you can get the jetting dialed in. I did it on my old CR500 taking it to the newer flat slide carb and was able to get it dialed in much crisper and even got better fuel mileage when trail riding. Glad to hear that the swap was successful.
