Default Transmission slips when there is a load applied.

Hi all,

My transmission slips when I accellerate hard, or when landing a jump and the wheel slows quickly. It’s a 2003 CR250.

Basically anytime there is a big load on the rear wheel. It’s a loud, grinding/clicking noise – like the chain is slipping on the sprocket, but it’s not.

The clutch works great and is smooth shifting. Never jumps out of gear or anything, and the tranny oil has less than 2 hours on it. Any ideas of what to look for? I will pull it apart tonight and check but I don’t have a clue what I’m looking for.

Might want to check your clutch springs as they may be weak.

Sounds to me like it needs clutch service.

The clunking noise could just be the chain.

Just a guess.

I would really check the condition of the sprokets, chain and the chain tension to start with. I have had some sprokets that were worn but not too bad (or so I thought) got up in the mountains and clunk clunk every time I got on the throttle. Made it home ok but wasnt the most carefree day of riding I ever had.

It was the front sprocket. Missing most of three teeth that were hidden by the chain the first time I looked.

OK so it was the final drive. I know you might feel tempted to just change the front sprocket but you really should replace the chain and rear sprocket as well, or you will be haunted (see how I got the Halloween terminology in there) by this for a long time.
