Running to Rich?

I just bought a previously owned 2003 cr85 expert. The owner bought it brand new in Missouri where he lived. I bought it of him through the internet and i have rode it twice, going through one tank of gas, and right where the exhaust comes out of the cylinder it is spitting out black exhaust goop, and out of the silencer. Could it be because I live in Nevada and since it is higher altitude it needs to be re-jetted?

all the oil mixed with fuel and poured into the tank has to go somewhere...so it goes out the end of the pipe..and in your case, some goes out through the exhaust pipe leak...i`d recommend sealing up the leak...there`s a few products out there that can be used to seal it up...i`d also recommend rejetting your bike...not that we can assume the previous owner had it jetted for anywhere in missouri...or even that he messed with the carb at all...some extra jets are nice to have...that`s the first thing i would get...that and a good helmet!

First thing you need to do is take the pipe off, and take the spring steel ring off the manifold and pitch it into the nearest waste receptical. Now clean off the manifold and apply a generous amount of Red RTV to the groove on the manifold...now slip the pipe back on. You won't notice near as much spooge now as it is blown out the end of the silencer and not all over the front of your cases.

To add on to what Tryce said...also check the pipe o-ring for cuts, etc and the pipe springs will loose tension after a good while to.

I am running Amsoil at 80-1, and it is still leaving spooge after the second tank of gas. The altitude here in Nevada is 4,700 feet.

Woah! Dont run 80:1, thats pretty dangerous. If your still spooging at that mixture, check your jetting. Run it at 32:1, no leaner then 40:1. Make sure the air filter is clean as well.

AHHHHHHHH, 80:1?! Well if your spooging, you probably dont have any damage. But do NOT run it like that anylonger. Change it to 32:1 and jet accordingly. That little screamer needs to be on a diet of 32:1 Less(less oil). It may come across like your bike is gunna die, but you SHOUlD be fine, but running these engines at that mix isnt a good "mix," lol.

well,i`d say that Amsoil sells oil that mixes at 50 to 1 and 100 to 1...i`m confused at ddhf_4_life`s post as it looks like he left out the word"or"...me thinks he meant 32:1 "or "Less...anyways,i run my honda cr500 with the Pro Honda brand HP2 100% synthetic racing oil at a premix ratio of 32:1...with excellent results...it would seem that Amsoil would not recommend mixing their product at 100:1 ratio without much testing and consideration given...there is just too much at stake-especially when we consider people at the track pay very close attention to mishaps-especially seizures...word spreads very quickly in racing circles or groups...most folks who know what`s up would recommend using the ratios as given by the oil manufacturer on the oil bottle instructions...i tend to use what`s recommended untill i see conclusive test results that would prove something to be superior...spooge is gonna happen...and i would rejet your bike if you have any doubts about it`s performance or jetting...i beleive Crogg has an cr80 and he seems to know jetting recommendations for this model bike...write him a PM...complete with as much details as you know about your machine...the bikes are delivered to the dealers with jetting for an average set of operating parametors...for higher elevations-rejetting is in order-proper jetting is the key to top performance and engine life...you should definatly want extra jets or a jetting kit...as well as other carb parts depending on how serious you want to get...and if you wanna run it at different temps and elevations...also,when we change oil ratios-we change the fuel to air ratio along with that change...if you do a search here-you will find out much about jetting...as well as links to more info...a carbuerator is a controlled leak at best-learn to control the leak and you`ll be much happier rider

fmfracing has some good starting points on jetting,,but you are higher in elevation. Honda OE manuals have tables in most cases to get you in the ball park.

You have just discovered that jetting has more to do with the oily buildup in most cases than does the oil ratio.

If you do like Tryce suggested and get it all the way to the end of the silencer, you wont notice it near as much.

Paul,,,
dont do the research on this,,I already did it several times. if you run the worst oil, it probably wont make you seize your piston ahead of the rod,,,in fact if you run without oil in your gas your piston will outlast your rod,,like I said, I already did the "research". I also have at least one 80-1 amsoil rod alongside a 50-1 belray MC1 rod.

Oh you know me Paul,,like you always looking for an arguement. One of the things in your post alluded to racers and how seizures etc affect them. I just havent found any oils that seem to cause piston seizures. I was amazed though at how long a bike can run without any oil though. Heck maybe you should try that so you can be amazed too!! :-)
