Default Powdercoating

Those of you that have had your frame powder coated, what did it cost you?

Cost depends on several factors.

I charge $100 in labor to coat a frame. Powder cost between $15 and $35
per pound, and it takes a pound to a pound and a half.

If you did all the prep (cleaning, media blasting, taping, etc.), your looking
at around $120 to $150 for the job. If the powder coater has to do all the
prep, add another $150 to the cost.

I just commissioned a batch of color matched Shasta White
from Tiger Drylac. Custom matched colors require minimum
orders (in this case 250 lbs). I keep about half for my
restoration work and sell the rest. I sell it for $20/lb plus
shipping if you want some.

Here's a picture of a restored and coated frame I just did using
the Shasta White:

Yes, I have Tahitian Red as well. Same price as the Shasta White.

Here's a picture of my '79 fresh out of the curing oven:

I bought and used doggers tahitian red on my 79cr250 looks GREAT. The RAL 3020 is as close as you will get without a custom mixed powder.

I ship items to some of your fellow "Ozians". Ridiculous prices, shipping is
often more than the goods. I'm considering renting space in a shipping
crate - we'll trade cost for time.

True statement. In fact, the RAL 3020 is a better match for the VMX plastic
than actual Tahitian Red. If you go with original plastic, use the custom
matched color. If you use aftermarket plastic, I recommend the RAL 3020.

Yes. Until recently, I did all of my own work. But I'm in the middle of a
giant mess relocating three shops into one new facility that is being built.

I have moved all of my gear from my California and Florida shops and only
have the smaller equipment left at my Tennessee shop. I still have my
powder coating guns and booth, but I'm limited to a 16 cu. ft. curing oven
as my large oven is in storage to be moved. Anything bigger than, let's say
a CR500 engine, I have to "rent" space in a friends oven. Same goes for
media blasting. I'm limited to a bench top cabinet because my "mongo"
blaster is also in storage. This is why I'm not taking powder coat work
right now for any of the larger items, like frames.

Once I get this new shop finished and set up - about the same time I hope
to take an early retirement from my day job, I'll be in gearhead heaven.

Does anyone know the closest equivalent RAL code for the Shasta White?

Cool on the larger single facility Dogger! It must have been a challenge to have things spread out over 3 locations like that. I am tempted to build a shop out in 29 palms but I live in orange county and I would have separate projects going at each or transport bits back and forth.
