Default Powder coating 87 CR 125 - need brand, # and color of paint to use.

Does anyone know what brand powder coat, paint # and color to use for a 87 CR 125 frame ?

Also, any idea if it can be bought in small quantities, just enough for my frame ?

I'm not PCing it myself and went to have it done and all the paint samples he has are either too red or too orange so this is why I am asking.

One was darn close but if it's off a by just a bit, it will look terrible with the stock plastic, so I didn't want to chance it until I investigated the matter more.

Hi, All I know is it is called Flare Red.

If you find out what the color is please post it on the board. I have an 86 CR250R I'm rebuilding and was planning on painting the frame too.

Thanks for your time

I used (powder coat guy actually) Tiger Drylac 2002 49/24550, don't know exactly what the color was called though.

For my clutch and aluminum mag covers I just told him to PC it satin black, you don't want flat and semi gloss will be too shiny.

The side casing (in pics below) is brand new and you can see the clutch cover matches very nicely.

The color is called Flash Red. Honda changed the color in '88 to Fighting Red
but switched back to Flash in 1990.

Because of my vintage resto work, I stock Tahitian Red (1978-1982), Flash
Red (1983-1987 & 1990-91) and Shasta White (1992-1996). All of these
powders had to be custom mixed because nothing "off the shelf" is a 100%
match - typical of Honda. I sell 8 oz quantities for $20 plus shipping. 8 0z.
is more than enough to coat your frame

As far as paint codes, I take a sample piece to my local PPG and they use a
spectral analyzer to color match it. Some of the more recent Honda colors
still have valid codes but not much from the 70s or 80s.

The engine and hubs are Satin Black and the exhaust is Hi-Temp Flat Black.

Hey Dogger:

Do you know what color they use on a 81 Maico" someone said that it's RAL 3020 or something close to that! I used Cardinal red on my last on one & it was just a little off.

Big, RAL 3020 (Traffic Red) is very close to Honda's Tahitian Red - In fact
a lot of people use it instead of Tahitian because it is a closer match to the
aftermarket plastic that's available. It is a little less Orange than Tahitian.
Traffic would be a very good match for your Maico. Here is a picture of an
airbox cover in Traffic.

Freak, I am 99.9% positive. I raced the '87 and '88, and my '88 was "Redder"
than my '87. Like I said, Fighting Red was only around two years. Honda
switched to Shasta White in '90. Remember, I'm only talking about frame
colors - not the plastic.
